Thanks again GE2. I just watched it on i-player. It appears it's not available for much longer so I only just got home in time. I found it really fascinating. He had an interesting life. I can't say I'd be adorning my walls with his paintings even if I had a few million to spare, but it was really interesting hearing about his work and others perspectives of it and him.

Finally got to see this last night. As many have said, he was a fascinating person. Not sure that he was a comfortable person to be around but he had an amazing talent.
Kind of off the wall but - am I the only person who thought it odd that Sigmund Freud's daughter-in-law named her son after herself? I do wonder what Sigmund made of that?

I wondered about that too, Joyce. And about her reading his love letters and prying so much into his life that he actually took a job on a ship to escape her. Reminded me a bit of the mother-son relationship in Cold Comfort Farm.

Glad I'm not the only one Rue. Yes, the love letter thing was more than a bit creepy. I also thought it odd when someone said that Lucien liked his mother best after she had her breakdown and became so passive.

I'd forgotten about that! Yes, Grandpa Freud would have had his work cut out for him with those two.

I managed to catch this and did enjoy it both for the interesting man and his work and for the molten chocolate caramel tones of Rufus's seductive voice. The thrills haven't stopped running down my spine. I wondered about that too, Joyce. And about her reading his love letters and prying so much into his life that he actually took a job on a ship to escape her. Reminded me a bit of the mother-son relationship in Cold Comfort Farm. I was talking to my mum about this prog . and when she commented about this I reminded her that before I was married I found out she was reading my letters from M(o)B. She very sharply replied that I was only 19 and what was I doing that my mother could not read!!

One thing is certain Rueful , you never get to be one step ahead of your Mum . I can't wait for my Issy to be older so I can have the upper hand But with my luck they will have changed the goalposts by then .

That was very very interesting! A documentary about intensity, I think. And about scrutiny - , Freud's eyes were sometimes really creepy. I especially liked the part when his first daughter was talking about the portraits of her mother. And I just loved the last quote: "The promise of happiness is felt in the act of creation but disappears towards the completion of the work. For it is then that the painter realises that it is only a picture he is painting. Until then he had almost dared to hope that the picture might spring to life."Rufus's narration was lovely. (It seems he has a special art-documentary-voice, because it reminded me of the style when he was talking about those "political pop" and "cynical realism" things in the China Power. ;D)
