I think, from some of the oblique comments he made in recent interviews, that he found the director of ALVH difficult to work with. I agree with kygal - his accepting this role might have more to do with the need to work and hoping, considering how good the source material was, that the project would be better than it turned out.

Yes, that was the impression I got, too. Apparently the whole project wasn't too well structured, like the movie.
