I got my copy yesterday I'm very excited to watch it (and it was a nice surprise to find that the DVD even has a German soundtrack ... just in case.)

I think someone has been playing The Deadly Game on my disks!! Oh well will have to send for a third one...third time lucky? And but before anyone asks, the player is fine, works just dandy with other BR disks.

That's rotten, LTM! I hope you have much better luck with the next one. The only DVD player I had that played region 2s died several months ago. I hope ATTAM comes out here soon. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the screencaps. Thanks, Laila!

How unfortunate - good luck with the third disk, LTM! Will write something about IASL soon, Kate, although there are already 27 pages about it!

Gosh! LTM I bet that is what you wanted to do. Mine arrived today. I hope the problem is not on all copies. I ordered the 'Restless' DVD from EZYDVD before I came on board. I hope I don't have to wait as long for it as I did for 'Hotel Noir', but least I won't live in fear that someone will wipe my v-box recording every time someone wants to record something .

I ordered the 'Restless' DVD from EZYDVD before I came on board. Frannie, please let me know, if there any subtitles on DVD of "Restless" - I have still the TV copy, which is perfect, but sometimes I would like to understand some words..

Was I dreaming or has there been a review of ATTAM by you RoofieRoo yesterday evening? Hope you didn´t delete it!
The following contains SPOILERS!!!
Anyhow, I saw ATTAM recently and I liked it very much. The darkness and hopelessness of these corrupt characters impressed me. I didn´t understand the whole complicated story (even not with German subtitles), but the idea was understandable. I like Toby Stephens, but in this case he was too severe. The others went through their parts quite well, and then there´s Rufus of course. I agree with GE2 that this is one of his best baddie roles, because he´s not so obviously bad, in the beginning at least. The final showdown was overdone in my opinion, all meeting and shooting each other, but the "good guy" turned out to be as corrupt as the others - this was so real! All in all a better film than I had thought, very noir and with Rufus as central character - and I don´t think I´m prejudiced there! I liked his "lightness" in playing, the scene with the prostitute and the one where he shoots his partner and at the same time holds him. Very slick in his actions and acting as reserved as we are used from him!

Echoing midoro's sentiment RoofieRoo - please repost your review of ATTAM, I rather enjoyed it, found it well written - was actually looking forward even more to seeing this movie after reading your review to see if I saw the same things as you.

I actually had second thoughts and deleted, felt a bit bad about being (you know what they say, if you cant say anything nice...). Anyways, here it is: ********* I bought the blu-ray but have to say I was disappointed, actually more like apathetic, which is worse. The pacing is too slow with action spaced out between lots of cockney exposition (you can play a drinking game with the recurring 'pop your cherry' line), tough guy bollocks and vacant staring. It's got a great cast but the plot is very standard gangster heist flick and it doesn't satisfyingly come together. Everything is a shade of grey, indistinct to the point it blurs into bland banality. There's no chemistry, style, or flair; no originality or stand out performances to save it. I'm not saying any of the acting is bad, but then neither is it particularly interesting. No character is compelling; even lovely Rufus seems to be flat a lot of the time. He may do subtle with the best, but this isn't subtle its almost vacant, which is really... odd. The fact none of the character's work is the flaw that kills it for me. Each character has charms and flaws but they cancel each other out. Parker (Rufus's character) for example could have been more of a b**tard, or more dangerous, or conversely more of a loveable rogue style anti-hero who's also a selfish crook. I wont spoil it, but the one very dirty deed Parker does do, comes so late in the game, I just don't care. Toby Stephen's character is a patsy despite being the protagonist, but for the most part he just runs around scowling. Dixon (Leo Gregory) is such a standard rookie cop trope I want to slap him... or rather the writer. Sands (Terence Maynard) is probably the only character with a solid personality but Sands is pretty much there to be the center balance between Parker and rookie cop Dixon and dispense nuggets of backstory and 'tough guy wisdom'. Mob boss Corso (Gabriel Byrne) at least demonstrably loves his son, but its still rather boring. It reminded me of 'To Live and Die in LA'. All the same elements, heists gone bad, car chases, naive partners of bent cops, with the rookie ending up taking on the persona of the 'mentor'... only here that makes zero sense. The major difference being the 'Parker' of 'To Life and Die...' had a lot of passion and personality, he was a rogue, aggressive, shady and ultimately an a$$ but you couldn't help but like him. No one is likeable in 'The Deadly Game', resulting in apathy.

I'm trying super hard not to read the reviews to see if for once watch I can a movie unspoiled. That gets harder and harder as I wait for ATTAM to be released in region 1. But I just want to say, RoofieRoo, that it is great to read differing opinions and engage in debate. If you ever go through old threads, you'll find a lot of reviews, although Rufus's work is often praised (we are Rooftoppers, after all ). So thanks for sharing your reaction, and I hope I will be able to read everyone's reviews soon.

Oh, please don't worry about giving anything a bad review, RoofieRoo! There's no law on the Rooftop saying we have to love every movie Rufus was in (I gave ALVH quite a scorcher once I had seen it ). On the contrary - we certainly aren't averse to a good discussion. I haven't read your review yet because I still have to watch the movie, but I'm looking forward to comment on it later.
