Don't worry, RR, most long-time members have region-free DVD players.

Thanks for the interesting reviews. I am not a huge fan of period films (runs and hides). Like the modern stuff better, so I may enjoy this one. There are several films Rufus has done that the ONLY thing I enjoyed was his performance. Its always good to hear different opinions as long as its respectful.

Gosh! LTM I bet that is what you wanted to do. Hope yours was OK Frannie. Blu-ray update. When I sent the fist disk back Amazon suggested checking the Firmware version on my player? Second disk arrived, same fault. Amazon then stated they would not issue a third disk - wanted to check their stock. I ordered a third disk from another supplier and would you Adam and Eve it, that had the same fault!!!! Time to check this Firmware thingy out me thinks!!! So I head off to the Sony site..oh joy! Well after many setbacks where the instructions do not tally with what happens, I finally upgraded my player. The Deadly Game plays just hunky dory now. So if anyone does have problems this may be the way to cure it!!!! So I will be back on to Amazon with a big for all their help and advice.

Just a review - no spoilers. I'll perhaps post something in the spoiler section for those that want to know a bit more. I normally like to watch a movie twice before I review it but this time I made it 3. Hence my slowness in posting a review. This movie is very fast paced and I've picked up more from each viewing. It's a thinking movie, so if you like a movie to spoon feed you it's not for you. There are alot of subtle details which you might miss on the first viewing so unless I'm really slow, you will need to watch it again and if at first a bit bewildering, I found I enjoyed it more every time I watched and now I fully understand the whole thing I want to watch again so I can fully enjoy the acting skills without having to concentrate so much on the plot. It's difficult to go into any more details without filling my review with spoilers, but I can say I was impressed with the level of emotion Rufus brought to the role. How many gangster movies can you say that about? There were no standard cliche reactions, no swaggering. I found it real. In the real world gangsters are shady. They all plot against each other and do dirty deals. They have multi layered personalities. They do what they have to do, but it doesn't mean they are happy with the decisions they make and the deeds they do. I actually think Rufus had the best role, or perhaps he just brought the most to it. Anyway, like I say I'll perhaps write a bit of the plot, or at least my interpretation of it in the spoiler thread, if anyone would like me to that is? It might help some whose first language isn't cockney . However, I'd encourage everyone to watch the movie at least once before reading the spoilers. That's not meant to sound patronising. English is my first (or should I say my ONLY language ) and I understand the cockney twang, I did fall into the trap of, oh that's Bond Street, hang on I've been there and that's whatever....... and had to rewind and pick the movie up again. What can I say?! What an airhead

Reading all your opinions and reviews, I was pretty glad to find I was not the only one who had trouble keeping things straight! As Mr. Kate wanted to watch the movie with me, we decided on the German soundtrack - I'm not sure how much I'd have understood in the original version I got sidetracked a few times by some of the London views or by something Mr. Kate said or by Jonathan Parker's handsome face, so I'll have to watch it again to get the details. All in all, I didn't think it was Rufus's best work. He did a very good job playing Parker in this understated way, as opposed to those blustering in-your-face bad guys, but he didn't get much of a chance to show his full range of expression. But that's not his fault, Parker's character was just written that way, and he made the most of him. Although he's a crooked cop, I couldn't help liking him, kind of. And he was definitely gorgeous in that blue coat As I said before, the convoluted story was sometimes hard to follow and I certainly didn't get all the little twists and behind-the-scenes connections, but it was entertaining nonetheless, with a fair share of "bang-bang" and a nice car chase but thankfully no senseless over-the-top violence. I really loved _the_ scene between Sands and Parker, which made for a pleasant change from similar scenes in other films. Very subtle and all the more impressive. Yes, Dixon is the typical idealist rookie cop, but I had no issues with that. I actually like those characters, which is of course what I'm supposed to do I also liked the somewhat troubled father-son relationship of the Corsos, whereas I thought Toby Stephens's performance rather wooden. I'm sure he's capable of more than this one facial expression. Pity that he didn't make more of Riley who remained rather colourless to me, although he was meant to be the central figure of the story.

Thanks for sharing your opinion Kate! Seems like we all didn´t understand everything of the story! On the whole I agree with you, only that I liked Rufus´ performance better.

Kate, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who needs to watch TDG/ATTAM several times! Meanwhile I saw it twice, both times using the English subtitles - I have a feeling that some parts of the music make it difficult to understand all the dialogues completely.
Thanks to the second watching I understand the main storyline now. But IMHO that should be clear after the first viewing, otherwise a movie is just confusing. And watching TDG twice is quite different from watching "The Tourist" a second time: when you know that JD is the Englishman Rufus pretends to be you see the movie from a different point of view. Sadly that's not the same with TDG.
There are two things I like: a lot of screen time for Rufus. As usual, he makes the most of his role which is limited by the script. Funnily a few scenes reminded me very much of "Zen". The other thing I liked were the scenes where you realize that it was shot in London. Apart from that either a few smaller parts of the plot should have been left out. Or some scenes should have taken longer to help the viewer to catch up with the plot.
And now I need to move to the spoiler thread....

Funnily a few scenes reminded me very much of "Zen". Especially when he was on the phone outdoors with just the T-shirt on

Finally got my copy of ATTAM/TDG and watched it last night. I definitely think it's a movie you need to watch more than once - lots going on and very fast paced, it's easy to miss the nuances. That said, I have to say that I liked it more than I thought I would based on some of the reviews. I feel about this one the same as I feel about Extreme Ops, not a good movie, but a good example of its type. If you're looking for a shoot em up cops and robber movie this is a good one.
Both Rufus and Gabriel Byrne were excellent. Byrne's Corso showed quite a range of emotions, from a gentle caring father to the ruthless killer. Rufus walked a tightrope in this one, trying to play all the sides against the middle. In the end, I felt sad for Parker, after the scene with Sands, you just knew things weren't going to end well for him. Toby Stevens was awful. Reminded me of James Franco in T&I - spent the whole movie with the same expression on his face.
Like Nell said, this is a movie you have to pay attention to, lots of twists and turns in the plot. There are deals and double-deals and even some triple deals. You never know exactly who to trust or if anyone is exactly who they say they are.
My main quibbles with the movie: Corso letting his son go to the final confrontation with Riley. Earlier he tells his son he doesn't have it in him to follow in his footsteps and be "the Merchant" and how he doesn't want to lose him like he did his mother. I took that to mean he wanted his son to steer clear of anything illegal. So why expose him to danger? The next quibble is minor, Dixon looked to old to be the idealistic rookie. Finally, I found it a bit hard to swallow that the whole thing was set in motion because Parker slept with some gangster's girlfriend? WTF??? Why didn't Parker just kill him? Or arrest him on a trumped up charge? Or set him up to take the fall for another crime? I know Parker meant to disappear with the money, but why go to all that trouble?
