yeah. I hate it.
I don't want to move again, but just a thought, if it gets too irritating...
our website has the capability to handle a board and the bandwidth.
I'd have to figure out how to set it up, but it's an option with no advertisements.

Definitely investigate it, if you can.

Sure, they are irritating initially, but as with most webpage ads, I just ignore them and barely even notice them after a short while.

How tacky!! And annoying. But I can live with it if it's no worse than this. If the ads start showing up between each post.....

I agree - if it's just the one after the first message, okay, but any more than that would be really annoying.

Hey, when did that happen?! I have no objection to them being in the banner (even if they are for gay hotels) but dont much like them after the first post, that does seem rather intrusive.

I thought I was the only one having this problem...
It's annoying, but I'm glad to know it's nothing to do with my computer. I suppose I can live with it (for now). I hope it doesn't get any worse!

well I've installed software and set up another board if anyone wants to go have a look at it. It's on the same server as our webpage with our domain name and since I manage the database and pay for the server space everything is ours. We don't have to subscribe to it so no ads. you can go take a look here if you'd like to see it: www.roofsewell.com/forum/index.phpI encourage you to create a log in and look around. I can wipe it clean before we start to use it, if we decided to use it, so don't worry about what you post for now.

My main concerns are
a) that we lose members if we switch.
b) that we lose our current content.
Discuss.

agreed on both counts-- can we bring our content with us and load it into the other database? I'm not the admin on this board so I don't have any idea what facilities are available for archive. I also don't like to switch so soon after the last switch but I understand the annoyance of the ads and I also understand the annoyance of having someone else control our content. I'd hope if we do decide to move you'd still be our admin Uke. You do a great job at it and it's not something I have the bandwidth to really take on at the moment. I'm not helping, am I?

a - possibly, which would be a shame but if we are able to email everyone currently registered, if they are currently active they may well return.
Current content is, of course, more problematic but no more problematic than when we arrived here and people are often more inclined to post if there is little there already???
What sort of traffic can the other board accommodate - is it likely that we would go over the limit or need to pay (more) to ensure that we have the capacity to host the traffic we have or hope to have?
How much can the "look" be changed? I like the Ruf banner on this one although I am not overly wedded to the wallpaper (sorry Uke:-()
I am easy really - I just thank you guys for taking the time and effort to manage all this for us Roof fans for without my Roof fix I would go nuts!
Edited to add - there is also a lot of discussion about the ads on CC's board (C19) and some chat about whether some browsers can block certain content. I am using Opera and have managed to block the "ads by Google" which is slightly more intrusive than the actual ad text. I believe Firefox has a similar blocking capacity but only one or two people seem to have managed to block the ads completely and only then by individually entering their addresses apparently. I learn on that board that this is only a trial until 16 April and that there is discussion, not to mention all out war on the admins board - maybe they will be dropping the interwoven ad lines if everyone gets up in arms!

I can answer number 2:
with what we have now it will be ages before we go over any limit. We have 200+ gig of storage space and I can't even remember how many terabytes of download available each month that we aren't even coming close to using. Both of these limits go up monthly something like gmail. It's part of the reason I can host all of these videos that everyone wants to see.
Unless Rufus suddenly does something like the 300 and becomes wildly famous we will never go over our limit and even then it's a very small yearly fee to increase our bandwidth and disk space. So don't worry about that. It's really huge. I have thousands of email addresses to use and all sorts of things we haven't even begun to tap. I did not open up the bb for .html but that is another possibility over there. We can also archive and roll off to storage if we like.
As to the look there is a customization interface. I've never hosted a bulletin board so I'm not sure exactly how to do it. Uke probably would understand it better than I and I have given her the admin login to poke around so don't be surprised if it changes--the look I mean.
Uke can email everyone I believe but I'll let her speak to that as I only have mod privileges on this board and not admin so I don't know for a fact. On the new board you would be able to do so.
