Stoppard Season grips Radio 3
Published Wednesday 9 May 2007 at 16:15 by Matthew Hemley
Tom Stoppard’s Rock’n’Roll will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as part of a special season to celebrate his 70th birthday.
Stoppard Season will coincide with the playwright’s birthday in July and will also feature a performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
Casting for the latter has not yet been finalised, though it is understood This Life actor, Andrew Lincoln, is being lined up to play Guildenstern, with Simon Callow in the role of the Player.
The line-up for Rock’n’Roll, which opened at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2006 before transferring to the West End, has yet to be confirmed.
Both productions are expected to air in the station’s Sunday evening Drama on 3 slot, but no dates have been finalised. The broadcaster is also understood to be trying to secure an interview with Stoppard.
Other highlights in the station’s summer season of drama include the first radio performance of Black Watch - the acclaimed stage play about the Scottish regiment serving in Iraq.
The play is based on interviews with soldiers conducted by Gregory Burke and is directed by John Tiffany. It is expected to be aired on June 10 in a 9pm slot.
Radio 3 is also broadcasting Abi Morgan’s Splendour, starring Sian Phillips, and Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, with Geoffrey Palmer and Alex Jennings.

If Rufus ends up doing this, I'll move the topic to the Rufus board.

I completely missed this...
DREAMER! Here is a chance to at least 'hear' Rock 'n' Roll and perhaps decide if you might be able to follow the play in english in the autumn.
I'm sure anyone from here going to see it would be happy to help you get round NYC. You'll find many folks speak Italian and many others speak spanish which is close enough to get the jist of the thing.

Alas, no Rufus, what a shame! www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2007/06_june/14/stoppard.shtmlStoppard's most recent play, Rock 'N' Roll – a thought-provoking play about loyalty, compromise, love and music – spans Czechoslovakia's recent history from 1968 to 1990, from the dual perspective of Prague, where a rock 'n' roll group symbolises the resistance to communism, and the British left, through the eyes of a Marxist philosopher at Cambridge. The cast includes Bill Paterson as Max, Daniel Evans as Jan, Penny Downie as Eleanor, Amanda Root as Esme and Ron Cook as Nigel. And: Radio 4 will also broadcast a new adaptation of Arcadia, staring Jason Watkins as Bernard, Nicola Redmond as Hannah and Jack Laskey as Septimus, and The Fifteen Minute Hamlet, with John Dougall as Hamlet. A touching love story, as well as a brilliant comedy of ideas, Arcadia examines literature, mathematics, landscape gardening and love through the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of Sidley Park, Derbyshire in the early 19th and late 20th centuries. Uhm, pointless!!!

Sure. Will have a go at it - will probably be in at least 3 files as it is rather long. Edited to add - Just listening to it - I would think that it will be rather confusing to someone who hasnt acutally seen it - the change of accents will be hard to fathom I would imagine. Bill Paterson is doing a good job but there is only one Jan for me - and he isnt in the radio play!!!!

Daniel is a wholly new Jan. Dominic was closer to Rufus' performance. At least my beloved Ferda sounds almost the same. Bit too flat though Thank you, quoll!! Just listening to the intro makes my heart leap

OK so I have it, who wants it? 3 mp3 files. What would you like me to do with them? I do think Bill Paterson would have made an excellent Max. I would have liked to see Amanda Root in Eleanor/Esme too if Sinead couldnt make it. The humour didnt really come through in this one for me - obviously having the audience would have made that more obvious but there was so much body language on the stage that you definitely got the nuances. Did I say how glad I am that I travelled half way across the world to see the original? ? I would be interested to see it performed by an amateur group - Arcadia was on here recently but I missed it - just to see if it has the same appeal when done by someone else on stage. It probably wouldnt travel well to Australia.

OK will megaupload sometime today.
Recording the production is actually quite easy - realplayer wont do it, you need a third party application like mp3mymp3 or audacity which just records while you play it through your sound card. mp3mymp3 has a one hour limit but I am not sure about audacity. It's easy enough to open the application a second time and start to record before you finish recording the bit that is getting close to the end. Both those applications are free and for Windows. I use mp3mymp3 because it is so simple, even I can do it!!!!!

My pleasure. It's TS after all. If you miss them here, I'll add them to the webpage at some point, likely on their own page as they are only marginally Rufus related. ;D

But do those of us who haven't seen the play yet really want to hear it for the first time Rufusless? (Serious question!)
