well that depends: I can tell you that even after several viewings you may miss quite a bit of what is going on. I wish I'd have had it to listen to first because I wanted to focus on the acting not so much on the story. It would have helped to not be distracted by the mintuea.

Although for those sorts of reasons, I usually prefer to read a play before I see it.

I agree with Maxx. If you're only going to see the play once or twice, you don't want to be overwhelmed and trying to keep track of all the plot lines and then missing out on (some of) the Rufus goodness. This definitely helps although just listening to it will probably confuse you enough which will then be great when you see the play and you think 'oh, so that's what wasgoing on'.
I'd say the perfect prep would be to read the play, then listen to this and then go see it.

And also have a look at the Wikipaedia entry for the Velvet Revolution just to get some of the names in perspective as well.

I just got a notification from Amazon yesterday that the release date for the copy of Rock'N'Roll I ordered has been pushed back to late September. I guess I can search the bookstores in the UK for copies, except that I think I remember someone saying that there was only a version made especially for the run of the play in London last year.

I agree with Maxx. If you're only going to see the play once or twice, TWICE! I'll be lucky to see it ONCE! As my boss used to say, I'm Rockbottom, not Rockerfeller! ;D The playtext is £2.00 at the Royal Court Bookshop: What's a playtext? Is that a copy of the play?

Yes the playtext is the script of the play - it was odd (to me!) that the program and the "play" were one and the same when it was at the Royal Court - and dirt cheap too! When the play moved into the west end there was a more expensive "real" program with pictures and all but without the text of the play.
BTW have you all seen the new pics from RnR on vue2sewell?
Edited to say - do try and see it twice, you get so much more from it the second time! Even if you have to live on bread and baked beans for a month, it is worth it!!!!!

I never got anything out of it any time because I just couldn't get over how brilliant Rufus was long enough to notice what was actually going on... So I read it on the plane back. At least this time around I'll have some idea what the thing is about.

That's what I meant - you will not be bothered by all the content if you know what is going on and will be able to focus all your attention on what Rufus is doing!
