Agree LTMRS. I was not really familiar with Rufus before EH. Really only started watching it because it was on after a show I used to watch. Did not realize Rufus was British until I googled and watched a vid about EH. His natural voice is just icing on the cake! And here I am!

So I just finished watching the last episode and it makes me sad to know there won't be anymore .... Even though the show is something like 2 years off the air, I'll put a spoiler space for those who haven't seen it yet and may find my comments too spoilerish....... * * * * * * * * * * * * * Once I got pass Rufus' American accent I slowly began to warm up to the show. Okay, since I'm a list person....(well sort of/maybe just tired) I made a list of what I liked and didn't like: 1) Rufus of course...always Rufus.... He was the draw for me and I probably would not have watched it if he wasn't in it. Rufus being the consummate professional made Jacob Hood a very likeable guy. 2) This show definitely had potential and hadn't even scratched the surface of what it might have been. There was so much more we, the viewers wanted to know about Jacob and what made him tick. 3) I actually like the character Felix..... he was a breath of fresh air. 4) My favorite episode was the last episode, Medea. We got to see more of the human side of Jacob and the science was in the background for a change...... What I didn't like: 1) Rachel - Maybe didn't like is an overstatement.....I'm going to take a lot of flack for this on this board because I know a lot you like Rachel (please be gentle with me . To clarify, It wasn't that I didn't like Rachel, it was more like she seemed superfluous. Jacob didn't really need a handler. He was able to think his way out of some pretty hairy situations. As far as the Jacob and Rachel impending romance, I just didn't see it happening. They had no chemistry.......She had more chemistry with the former FBI agent. And Jacob he needs someone more on his intellectual level..... 2) I wish they would have added more intrigue to the Pinocchio storyline. Maybe, Jacob and Pinocchio were rivals and Jacob won some sort of academic prize, which lead Pinocchio on her downward spiraling life of crime. She made it her life's mission to get revenge on Jacob and watch him suffer. 3) Worse episode - Olfactus.......pointless Anyone want to discuss.........?

I agree with all your likes, and #2 and 3 of your dislikes! In fact your experience was much like mine, because I probably would not have stuck with the show if Rufus weren't in it, but over time I was glad I did because I think it found its footing and improved a lot over the course of the season (with a couple of exceptions, notably Olfactus and Electro). In particular, episodes written by show creater Stephen Gallagher were good.
I also liked Felix. He was fun. I thought it was unfortunate that they got rid of Geppetto right away too. However, it was nice for the viewers that they wrapped it up. That was the 13th episode, and that was the original number of episodes ordered. I appreciated that at least they were considerate of viewers, in case more episodes hadn't been ordered. I have lost a number of series with unresolved cliffhangers, and it's annoying.
I don't blame you for not liking Rachel much. I didn't like her much myself at first--never because of the actress, who I thought was fine, but because I thought the part was very underwritten. I think for the most part, women cops/agents etc are the worst written type of characters on tv. The writers (who are usually men), are usually trying so hard to make them a type--tough, no nonsense, woman living in a man's world--that they forget to make them a person. I think that as the series went on, Rachel's character did develop though, and by the end, I liked her a lot. It wouldn't really have mattered to me whether or not they'd developed a romance if the series had continued, but I did think they had great chemistry as friends and colleagues, and many romances start out that way.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, dolce! Don't worry, people here will defend their views, but no one takes anything personally!

Rueful I agree that male writers seem to write female law enforcement officers as tough as nails women. I'm sure if the show had continued I would have warmed up to Rachel. One of the funniest things was when Rachel took Jacob to the shooting range and Jacob closes his eyes and shoots the guns without aiming. Although he is more on the biological side of science, I'm sure Jacob knows a thing or two about ballistics and was joking with Rachael. I just love the subtleness of Rufus' acting, the faraway glances, the subtle humor, the pauses.....I could just watch it again and again just to the little things that Rufus will do. Dolce -
No - no worries about upsetting anyone with your comments - even a fanatic EH fan like myself can see your points. I agree totally with your likes, especially your feelings about Felix. I thought he was a good addition, he was the "common man" the one who had a way with people. Jacob would appeal to a suspects better nature, Rachel would try to bully the suspect, and Felix would gain their confidence with a well thought out story to find out what he wanted.
Agree with Rue that Rachel, at least at the beginning of the series, was badly written. The male writers went overboard in trying to create a tough woman cop. But she softened as the series went on - I couldn't imagine the Rachel of Resurrection having a romantic relationship with Hood, but I could see the Rachel of Medea doing so. Disagree that there was no chemistry between them. They were obviously becoming friends and felt warmly about each other, and as Rue said, that is how many workplace romances start out.
I don't think that Rachel was totally superfluous, I mean someone had to handle Jacob's travel and schedule and so yes, I can see the FBI assigning someone to him for that, a sort of cross between a handler and a PA. But outside of one reference in the pilot, they was never a credible threat to Jacob's life. If the series had continued I would have hoped that they would have shown that the threats to Jacob's life were on-going, not just a one off attempt by some crazed extremists.
I agree with the need to add intrigue to the Pinocchio story line. In Resurrection Jacob says that he's been chasing this geneticist for some time. It would have been nice if they had added more to the back story.
My favorite episode is Subway, followed by Surge. Good interaction between the characters, good story, and the science and plots hung together.

You all know what I think! Agree with everyone. I did end up liking Rachel. Jacob was such a complex and interesting character. Really thought the series had great potential and I really miss seeing how it would have grown. That is what is so upsetting to me...that and not seeing Rufus on a weekly basis!

Although he is more on the biological side of science, I'm sure Jacob knows a thing or two about ballistics and was joking with Rachael. You know, that hadn't occurred to me. I took it at face value, but you're right, he may have just been teasing. Makes a lot of sense, because it wouldn't be the first time he teased. Either way, that was one of my favorite scenes! But outside of one reference in the pilot, they was never a credible threat to Jacob's life. If the series had continued I would have hoped that they would have shown that the threats to Jacob's life were on-going, not just a one off attempt by some crazed extremists. Excellent point! They became more of a crime/problem solving team, rather than a "detective" and his bodyguard, which I was very glad about. However, for realism, they would have had to show that he really needed an FBI agent (actually two, by then) to keep him safe. Really thought the series had great potential and I really miss seeing how it would have grown. That is what is so upsetting to me...that and not seeing Rufus on a weekly basis! Me too, especially the not seeing him weekly. I was quite spoiled, because, like you, it was my first exposure to Rufus's work, so I was getting a new episode every week and getting to catch up on all his movies at the same time. But I try to console myself that if there had been more EH then we wouldn't have gotten Tom Builder or Aurelio Zen (oops, better not get started on that either!).

Very true Rueful. Not sure if we would have met Tom or Aurelio if EH had not been cancelled. But...I want my cake and eat it to. Ha Ha! EH is near and dear to me because I was exposed (like you and many) to Rufus because of the series. That took me to PH and The Rooftop, where I have met some great people and I am having great fun! Oh Lord, I have had to much wine! Will shut up now.
I still want a season 2 and 3 of EH! And Zen and Tom......put a little Adam(maybe) in the mix!

Joyce - That's why I love the Rooftop so much....The genial camaraderie around here is a welcomed change from some other message boards I have visited.

Kygal - I was sad after watching the last episode. Because it was such a good episode and there was so much more to know about Jacob. For instance, his friendship with the FBI director. He seemed as if he barely acknowledged Jacob I would have liked known more about their friendship and was there more to FBI director's icy stoicism. The beauty of owning the DVD is I can watch it again and again...... And who knows, maybe I might start liking Rachel and see some of that imaginary chemistry everyone else sees..... (for dramatic affect).

I still want a season 2 and 3 of EH! And Zen and Tom......put a little Adam(maybe) in the mix! From reading the article PGG posted here, I think we, the viewers would have been lucky to get a second season of EH from Rufus. He seemed antsy about committing himself to the series. Also, American network TV with its usual order of 22 episodes, surely would have made dear Rufus run for the hills. It makes for some bad episodes (a la Olfactus & Electro) to fill airtime.

Rufus cake....I like that!
I do think some tv series have run their course...like csi. I do get tired of them. I would have liked another season or two of EH. I think Rufus would have done it another year or two. Doubt he would sign on for more than that. He signed on thinking it would last a while and he was nervous about that, but I think he would have been around after season one.
If the show came back for a season 2 and he was not in it....I would not be interested.

It's a shame because so many of us adore Jacob so much that we wish there were more episodes. I also wouldn't have watched it if they continued it without Rufus. I doubt I would have watched it for long, if at all, if Roof wasn't in it from the beginning. I also agree with you, Dolce, when you say that the Pinocchio story could've had more to it. One of the things that bothers me most about the ending of the series was the bit in the second Pinocchio episode (with the quadruplets). The moment where Rachel mentions something along the lines of "a person would have to be crazy to clone themselves" and then you see Jacob tear-up and the story never really explains why. It's been aggravating me because the thought of Jacob and his wife maybe in the past trying to have a child would be a heartbreaking addition to the story. What do you all think? Could that have been a possible revelation for season 2? I think Jacob would have made a fantastic father. The way he acts with his nephew and one of the quadruplets is just so sweet. The line he says about there being "no mother panicking, no dad sighing with relief", and the slight hint of a smile after he says it is just priceless.

Oh yeah, there were definite hints during the series about the relationship between Jacob and Maggie. In Resurrection he says that "not a day goes by that I don't wish she was back." Then in Electro he talks about couples growing apart, "but if they're lucky, they get to hit the re-set button and find out it's all still there." I agree with Meg that Jacob would have wanted kids. In Savant, he tells Rachel he's a fan of kids, and he really seemed taken with the quints in Pinocchio.
