Sigh. I'm through with my EH DVD box, and I'm going to miss it! Well, "Olfactus" had a silly script, but Rufus looking particularly gorgeous made up for that in my eyes "Medea" was one of the best episodes. It was different from most of the others - not the usual standard development, more character-driven and giving Rufus the opportunity to show his full range of emotions. Loved defiant Hood staring down Wynne. And the ending. So sweet Pity the show was cancelled after that, just when the relationship of Jacob and Rachel started to move to another level. With better scripts and more room for Rufus to develop the character, it would have been fun to watch more. (On the other hand, maybe there would have been no Zen, so I won't complain too much.) All in all, I get the points that were criticised, but then, many cases on CSI or Grey's Anatomy or whatever other show involving science or medicine are just as far-fetched. I'd have loved to see more of Jacob and Rachel and also grew to like Felix well.

Well, what IS perfect? Zen comes close, I think, but as for Eleventh Hour, I loved it immensely anyway.

I agree with you Meg! There is something about that Jacob Hood! I get a kick out of your devotion to Thomas. He is a great character, and you win the prize as his most devoted fan!

Yes, you are definately Thomas's most devoted fan Meg! He is lovely - especially with the baby, but I'm torn between Jacob and Aurelio as my favourite Roof character. Jacob is very sweet but Aurelio is a little bit sneaky too I like that!

but I'm torn between Jacob and Aurelio as my favourite Roof character. Jacob is very sweet but Aurelio is a little bit sneaky too I like that! Same here! I love Jacob because he's such a decent, thoughtful, gentle man. Not at all the arrogant super-brainy super-scientist who knows it all (I think he's deliberately playing against the stereotypes here just as in his portrayal of Aurelio). The backstory about the loss of his wife makes him so heartbreakingly vulnerable at times that you just want to sweep him into your arms. I don't know if the scenes were already written that way or if it's just Rufus's superb acting again, but I think those little glimpses of his pain and sorrow were very well done, small, fleeting, but impressive, preventing the widower thing from turning out sappy and over-sentimental (which could have happened easily). You can feel the underlying sadness in Jacob that is never far from the surface all the time, but not in a melodramatic way. The humorous touches are lovely, too. They should have allowed him more of those!

As usual, I agree with everything you say, Kate! I also like that Jacob's not only an "arrogant, super-brainy scientist who knows it all" but that he's also not completely clueless. He knows what he's doing without being pushy, but he's also just as much in the dark as the rest of us. I like that he also doesn't have to rely on Rachel to remind him of things 24/7. He keeps Rachel on her toes, but in a way that he doesn't totally have to rely on her to help him get the job done. I like how they also don't keep his wife's death so prominent, because you're right, that really would have turned it into a sap-fest and to be honest, I really don't think the stories really would've gone anywhere. At times it's very easy (for me anyway) to forget that he's a widower. I like the underlying sadness, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE his attitude. The humour that he sneaks in at various moments is so refreshing. While I was watching Cardiac I loved how he was explaining to the headmaster about the ventilation shaft and how he kept popping his cut finger into his mouth after he finished speaking. The humour evens out the sadness that he's feeling personally and all the sadness that surrounds him when he's speaking to relatives of victims or victims themselves. He's so charming and if I'm honest, he's my perfect guy. Kind, soft-spoken, focused while being distracted, owns the child inside of him (love his response to what Rachel says to him about dementia, also in Cardiac), big-hearted, caring, has a true sense of humanity, and is funny as hell when you least expect it. That's my kind of guy Awww thank you ladies for what you said about me being Thomas' #1 fan. It's hard to not be charmed by Mr. Clarkson. He's charming in nearly every scene he's in (and what man isn't adorable with a baby in his arms? Especially one he wants to hang out with all day? Watch his face when Wilberforce tells him he's wanted back in London. That sigh and look of disappointment of going back to work is priceless )

Yes! [insert a very big sigh here] And it surely doesn't hurt that he looks gorgeous as hell on top of that with his ruffled curls. I also like the way he's dressed, smart but comfortable.

No surprise that I agree totally with Meg and Kate on the subject of Jacob Hood! While some of the scripts may have been weak - overall I would say that Jacob is one of Rufus' best characters. He is a decent man trying to make the world a better place. Even though his life wasn't the best he tried to make things right for others. Remember in the episode "Pinocchio" when Jacob is talking to the bed-ridden old lady? And she says she's sorry for him. Jacob looks surprised and asks why? Her answer - Because of the weight he carries from all of the terrible things he sees.
I also loved the sly humor that Rufus/Jacob brought to so many situations - knowing how witty Rufus is in real life I would have loved to have seen more but that was not to be. Almost every episode had a moment that, if it didn't make you laugh, it at least made you smile.
I also agree with Meg about his relationship with Rachel - yes she had to watch his back, but he wasn't helpless. A little careless maybe about his own safety but only because he focused on getting the job done. And yes - he DID keep Rachel on her toes also - he expected a lot from her when working on cases and she was to determined that she would deliver (unlike his previous handlers.) They were partners - each dependent on the other to fill in the gaps.
Meg - I wouldn't say that Thomas Clarkson is charming - I think he's just a little bit naughty! His one-liners were not only funny but very apt to the situations. It's very easy to imagine someone around him smacking him on the arm and saying "don't say things like that!" while at the same time giggling from his remarks.
