Tip, no need to appologize, in case anyone hasn't noticed Americans, sorry those who reside in the US, need to be entertained by our news, in the UK they are known as news readers , which is what they are, here in the states we have to make them superstars, pet peve #, well I lost count, but our country is obsessed by movie stars, which is unlike anything I've ever seen. We have the shortest attention spans which is why the current crises we're in rates an average of of 30 seconds on the nightly news. Which is another reason I usually watch Fox News, or CNN, both tell you the news and give you in depth reporting.
There is something seriously wrong here when you devote the majority of your newscast on shopping tips, or what harlot, I meant starlet was wearing to starbucks today. More people have voted in the past for American Idol than president, that's obscene.
Our value system is s%#t and we have no one to blame but ourselves. I hate the phony liberal left, whose credo and mantra seems to be do as I say not as I do. While they live behind their private gates and spew their venom towards their government. I don't see them turning down their 20mil paychecks. I wonder if they in fact know the true definition of "liberal" , I doubt it.
Sorry, for the longwindedness, but I really needed to vent. Great thread BTW, and that vid was funny as hell. Springsteen comes to mind (another phony, two words Bruce, STOP YELLING)

springsteen? oh well... this thread is for venting, not arguing, you go girl...
i adore this fry & laurie show. THIS WILL BE MY RAVE. whenever you have the time, or need a lift of spirits, go to youtube and watch one of their skits. all hugh's songs are ROTFL material, and i especially recommend "the theater master class", where stephen fry is at his very best.

Ok the America thing? It's been around for far longer than American broadcasting. It's kind of ingrained in our culture and I don't believe it is laziness or arrogance, it's just what we are used to calling ourselves and our country. Even back in the days of Columbus...both continents were called "The America's"... we are just one of those. And because our countrty is called United States of America...we are allowed to call oursekves "American"...no other counyry has the name "America" in their title...You don't see Brazil America, or Columbia America...
Hopefully that clears it up a little.

I couldn't get the link to work for the pictures of Zach, but if anyone is interested, you can go to www.webnursery.com and enter 362702720 for the customer number, then click on his mom's name and it'll take you to the newborn portraits of him. I ordered a set of pictures today; I chose the one of him holding the little stuffed football because I love the expression on his face in that one. There's also a sweet one of him cradled in my brother's hands with his mom's hand resting on his tummy and he's holding my brother's thumb with one hand and his mom's finger with the other. And to answer a question a few posts back, Zach isn't my first experience of being an aunt. My brother has a six-year-old son from a previous relationship and my step-brother has a step-son who came into our family at age two--he's now 22--so I consider him my nephew as well. He also has an almost 17-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son.

as i said, DGD, its not the term "american" that bugs me. its when "america" is mentioned as if the u.s. included all of america, which is a continent including other countries that do not belong to the u.s. in any way. a bit as if canada decided to call itself the northen hemisphere.

I guess it comes down to the fact that we seem to be the only country that kept the "America" in our title. I mean the history of the name "america" is quite interesting. According to wikipedia..."An accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, explains that the name was derived from the Latinized version of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci's name, Americus Vespucius, in its feminine form, America, as the other continents all have Latin feminine names.[13]"
What's interesting to me is that none of the other countries on these two great continents chose to incorporate the name "America" into their countries name.
Maybe that is why we think we own the title.

... no other country on any continent is using the continent's name in its own name... and first settlements were not even inthe states, but in the islands, and in canada... anyway... there is so much we can do...

ambra, little Zach is beautiful! He seems very alert for a newborn. Hope you get to see him in person very soon.
tipou, thanks for the great Fry and Laurie link. It was really funny. I've of course heard of the show, but never bothered to look for any of it. Not only did I enjoy that one, but I listened to several others as well, and they were awesome! (I love all the connected video links on youtube. It's like wikipedia--I can waste a great deal of time, but learn a whole bunch, by jumping from link to link to link.)
I'll drop a little rave now--The Closer is on tonight, and I love that show! Why couldn't Rufus be on the Closer?

Yeah but just imagine all of those Africans who are from different countries and backgrounds all lumped into the same term? And actually South Africa and The Central African Republic both use the continents name in their title. www.travelblog.org/pix/maps/africa.jpg

Thanks for the compliments about Zach, tipou and rueful! He looks alot like my brother--same nose and mouth, too early to tell with the eyes. My brother has green eyes similiar to Rufus', just a bit more of a greyish tint to them. My brother's older son somehow ended up getting my dark blue eye color; in fact, he looked more like me as a toddler than he did my brother!
Now here's my rant for the day--Why do some people insist on talking on the cellphone while they're in the bathroom? When I go to the ladies room at work, it never fails that at least once a day, there's someone in there, often in a stall, talking on a cellphone. Now, we aren't allowed to have cellphones out at our desks, even when we're on our breaks, but there are plenty of other areas for people to go and talk other than the bathroom. Why would you want to talk to someone while you're "doing your business" or in a room where people are doing theirs?

certainly not !!!! people i knnow are informed that this is a no-no, and if i ever find out they are speaking to me while on the can, they will forever be damned. i wish i could have this power over the people who insist to have their cellphones ring very loud in restaurants. and then having oh so very important conversation about where they will be in the next fifteen minutes, or why has their youngest left his hockey bag in the hallway. i spend my day on the phone, which is part of my job. the phone rings, i have to take it, because i might havespent days tracing the person calling. any ring tone makes me jump and reach for the phone. so please, please, when i am in a place of leisure, when i am at right to expect a quiet lunch or dinner, please, people, discover the fun of phone vibrators, and of whispering conversations. have a heart.

The first couple of times I heard someone on a cell phone in the stall, I thought they were talking to me and responded. It would never have occured to me that someone would be on the phone! I wish I were a bolder person who would have the guts to simulate loud, unpleasant sounding noises in the stall next door to a person having a cell phone conversation in a public bathroom.

Sounds like somthing I would do.
My rant for the day...people that are irresponsible. As a few of you here know, I am in the Navy and part of being in the Navy...*a large part mind you* is standing duty. The duty I stand consists of driving about 35-40 minutes to lower base Bangor (Washington) from PSNS Bremerton where I work on a daily basis. I stay at lower base until about 6pm unless something comes up then I stay later. This is after I work all day at my "normal" job. Then after I go home at 6pm, I am on call until 0630 the next day, when the next person who has duty is supposed to meet me at lower base Bangor to relieve me. They are supposed to be there at or before 0630 so that I have plenty of time to get to work.
Now here's the rant...The last 3 times I've had duty, I've been late to work because...you guessed it, the relief didn't show up on time. Then when I call said relief, they don't answer the phone, or they say that someone else had duty. Today, I was 20 minutes late because he never showed. Oh and it's the same guy all three times. And the worst part is so far nothing has really been done to him. If it had been me that was late to relieve someone three times in a row, I would be standing in front of the Captain getting my butt chewed.
