What makes you tick? One of your co-workers made you want to throw hot coffee on them? Post it here and get it off your chest! Just keep in PG-13... Oh and also please respond intelligently and respectfully, I don't want to make the mods shut down this thread because it turned into a brawl. Everyones oppinion is their own. I'll start. I have been snuckered. I've been snuckered by an elitist, arrogant ba**erd. I believed Obama's promises of change and hope we can all believe in, I believed him when he said he was going to be different than the political and corporate fat cats that have been sucking this beautiful country dry. I believed him when he said he was going to fix the economy, provide health care for everyone, be a champion for our environment, lessen our dependency on foreign oil...all that. I believed him. Don't I feel stupid. Not even in office yet and already he is spending $150,000,000.00 on his inauguration and Lord knows how much on his tricked out Caddilac. And where is this money coming from when our country is crippled by a reccesion that is starting to turn into a full fledged depression? Is it coming from his own pocket? I think not. It's coming from my pocket, and my parents pocket and the pocket of every hard working schmuck out there who tries their damndest to make enough to live on, only to see it going towards making Barack Obama's life easier. Millions of people are losing their jobs and homes and his answer is to throw worthless money at us and ride around on a train? What kind of answer is that? It's not. Putting together another stimulus plan is by far the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. How can you give people money when your bank account is in the red? Someone please answer that one for me. Instead of postponing the pomp and circumstance of this Suber Bowl esque inauguration and just rolling his sleeves up, he is living it up and picking out puppies for his daughters. Wake up Mr. President, there are more important things to do right now than soak up your celebrity status. I just hope you do it before this country fails completely. Man I had to get that off my chest...

AMerica can be proud to have elected its first black president. As he said, 60 years ago, his father wouldn't have been allowed to eat in a restaurant in the states.America has a lot to celebrate. He'll get down to work..just give him the chance.Yes, its hard when you feel disappointed in the economy to be optimistic about the future but its probably not as bad as you're afraid it is.

I just think he could have had the celebration and put forth the pride that America feels without flaunting his now limitless bank account. It's just sh***y to look at the TV and see all of this and know that while he is lapping it up, millions of people don't even have a roof over their heads. It's just a rant, and I am tottaly entitled to it.
And as to the question of why not a big party? We don't need a big party IMO. America has always been a strong and powerful nation so why not practice some subtlty and focus our recources and attention on the most pressing matter? So that the rest of the world can see that we put our nation before our need to "party"?
I think it's time re-group and start fixing some of the problems we have, so that the rest of the world sees us like they did back in WWII. Stong and formidable, not weak and arrogant.

Re: President Obama's innauguration, no one mentions the vast amounts spent on parades and parties past. Especially that of his Democratic predecessor, slick willie. This is a joyous day for America, dare I say the world. For they are experiencing the joy and elation that our very young nation is at this moment. I shed a tear during his speech, and felt a chill. Never would I think that this day would ever happen. Our country, our very young country has a very elitist opinion of themselves, for good reason, but that thinking has gotten us into some major problems. We could learn a thing or two from other nations, the UK managed to elect, if that is the correct term a female PM, India too why then has it taken our "great" nation so very long for us to elect a man of mixed race as President? So much for for our forward thinking.
I did not vote for the man, and regret now that I didn't. Anyone who wishes this man ill will think again, it is your country you want to fail. Every politician makes promises they know will never come to fruition, give this man time, remember he has to work with both sides of the aisle and it won't be easy. He has given us all hope that we can be a great nation again and earn the respect that we have lost.

I didn't want to add a pet peeve that I have with my previous post. So I'll list at least one. I work in the financial industry and have for 20 years now, I have seen the greed and what it did to Wall St. My company is now a sad memory, luckily we merged and thankfully I am still gainfully employed and happy at that. I hate The bernie madoff's of this world, I hate that warnings were ignored, I hate bloated politicians who take advantage and think that laws do not apply to them. And mostly I hate people who criticise their government and then admit that they do not vote.

Okay, I will only post this one time, because I am sorry, I think the rant about the inauguration that was started was just misguided.
We are in an economic, political, spiritual quagmire in this country, and Pres. Obama is the one shining light of hope that we have that it will not be business as usual tomorrow, that anyone, ANYONE, in this country can reach their dreams, regardless of race, economic status or ethnic origin.
Dirtygirl, do you not realize that a few short years ago, African Americans were treated as less than whole people and that this inauguration on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which was built on the backs of slaves, was the culmination of hundreds of years of struggle? That oppression did not in the end triumph, but that Dr. Martin Luther King's words, "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we're free at last" applies equally to us all?
Why should we not celebrate this?
His "tricked out limo" is "tricked out" because there are individuals in this country who cannot abide a black man in the White House except as a member of the housekeepeing staff, and we must protect the President and his family. It's not a show of extravagance, but one of necessity.
FYI...I didn't see George and Laura Bush leave the White House in a taxi, they spent quite a bit of the taxpayers' money today to get back to Texas.
Sorry for MY rant, just couldn't let this go by.

Rugirl, that was lovely, I am tired of the stereotypes of any one individual group. I am first generation Italian American, my dad was born in Italy and my mom's background is Spanish (Tenerife) and Italian. All through my school years I was kidded that my family must be in the mafia b/c I was Italian, I've had to put up with that all my life, even now. There are people out there who will always stereotype people because of ignorance or just plain stupidity. I don't know which. Racist remarks only show how shallow people are and have no place here or anywhere, not ever.
We as women have only had the "right" to vote in 1920, the "poll tax" was abolished in 1964, blacks were given the "right" to vote in 1870, how absurd is that, especially for women? We now have a female Speaker of the House and we almost had a female president. We have made great strides as a nation but we need to do more. As Bob Dylan said, The times they are a changin'. And none too soon.

MAJOR PET PEEVES: WHEN FRIENDS ARGUE ABOUT POLITICS!!! LOL
just one thing about inauguration day: since i am a tragically unknown artist, i work as a credit agent
needless to say, a financial crisis is not, in principle, the best time to be a credit agent. you basically have to call people for payments they cannot make (as compared to regular times, when you call people for paymetns they dont want to make - huge difference). everyday i have to call our american clients, in the midst of a financial krach, and try to get our money back.
not that i want to show my age, but i have been a credit agent during a couple of bad periods before this one, which is, by all accounts, the worse, especially in the u.s..
however... despite the bad economics, people keep their chins up. they pick up the credit calls and take arrangements. they have projects. they try and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
no... i did not put on my pink-couloured glasses. there are bankruptcies, and, yes, some folks elect to hang up to my face and end up in collection.
believe me, having been a credit agent for years and years, i am not exactly a naive and daydreaming smiley.
but while i had prepared for a horrible winter at work, in fact, i hear a lot of optimism in my calls. i can say the following: 1. it was not the case in the previous recession and grey periods i've known. 2. optimism is certainly a much better way to envision the future and get yourself through hell.
long live president obama.

Back at ya, Peachy, well said in your own right. My mom's family is also from Tenerife by way of Cuba, so we may be related.
...and I think that was the point of today, wasn't it? We are all related, and all responsible to one another in the end.
How lucky we were to be alive to see it.

I have to agree. If there was ever a reason for a huge party, it's the inauguration of the first African-American President, just a few decades after they were given the vote. I never thought this day would come in my lifetime and I'm proud that our country has, for the most part, has put the racist attitudes of the past behind us. Sure, the money for the inaugural festivities are more than usual but in this case, I think it's justified. Besides, it's not like Obama is going to have is party and then slack-off. He's been working since the day he was elected, lining up the best people, both Democrats and Republicans, to get our country back on it's feet. He has a long, hard road ahead of him but I think if people give him time and don't expect overnight miracles, he'll live up to our expectations. Just my two cents worth.

Okay folks, I love this thread, but let's make an effort to steer clear of politics, religion and race/creed/ethnicity. The topics just become inflammatory too quickly.
Remember, on the internet no one can see your frustration or understand what you might have suffered by looking at your face as you vent or gush. It's too easy to inadvertently insult someone when you think you're being honest and non-confrontational.
thanks everyone and have fun with this one
