Interesting thoughts, Castanea!
I like the poem, too (and I have to say that I almost like the translated version better than the original wording).

I think he makes the gods swoon, castanea (although can't be a dangerous thing to do. perhaps we should warn him)

kissmekate, it's funny, because I posted the original poem thinking of the German speaking ladies!!! It's really funny. I normally love Rilke's poems in their original German, but this translation is very good. Such beautiful screencaps. That first one is Oh, those eyes. The scene in the abbey always breaks my heart.

just posting a note on this to bring it to the front of the list of Rufus works - u dont realise until u wade through this list how much stuff he has done - anyway. i popped ino the local video hire to look at new release etc, not expecting to see anything new in there for Rufus as i have scoured the shelves on more than one occasion. Then boing! Rufus lovely young being seductive face appeared in a sea of titles in the drama section - the Woodlanders, a brand new copy, has finally made it to little papamoa. 'UNBELIEVABLE' i informed the entire store. I've got it for 8 days and would be watching it now if not for gorgeos autumn sun all over my telly. will b complusory viewing tonight. will attempt a review ... can't wait.

This is also one of his most wonderfully tragic and subtle works - I just adore it!

Finally I watched The Woodlanders. Archaic Torso of Apollo
We cannot know his legendary head with eyes like ripening fruit. And yet his torso is still suffused with brilliance from inside, like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low,
gleams in all its power. Otherwise the curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor could a smile run through the placid hips and thighs to that dark center where procreation flared.
Otherwise this stone would seem defaced beneath the translucent cascade of the shoulders and would not glisten like a wild beast’s fur:
would not, from all the borders of itself, burst like a star: for here there is no place that does not see you. You must change your life.
b] I was browsing the 'The Woodlanders' reviews and came on this in Castaneasativa's post . I don't know how I missed it, but it certainly needs re-posting What an incredibly beautiful piece of work. I cannot read it in the original German but it must be even more so . Thank you Castaneasativa

I cannot read it in the original German but it must be even more so . As I stated at the time, this is an excellent translation which, in fact, appeals to me more than the original for once.

My mother especially loves this film - it always makes us both laugh to hear the lovely broad west country accents- and it makes me especially homesick too.

Re-watched The Woodlanders - such a beautiful and sad story! I love Rufus´ subtle performance and the emotions he shows with his eyes, hands and in all his behaviour. Loved esp. the scene in the abbey and the wonderful kiss. Didn´t read all the posts, but there´s a lot of crying and "oh Giles" - and I agree. It also exhausted me to watch it. Wanted to listen again to the audio of Rufus, but I´ll have to postpone that as well as reading the book, which I don´t know yet.
