I think it is time for a Woodlanders re-watch. I love reading Hardy novels in the wintertime, and I love this film, although it is oh so sad and I can't help wishing things would have taken a different turn for them, that Giles's hard work and honesty and kindness would have been rewarded by a long happy life with the woman he loved. On the other hand, life just doesn't always work that way. That the story is not unrealistic at all makes it all the sadder, somehow.
At any rate, this is of Rufus's best performances ever. His Giles is a sweet, gentle, lovely man without being unbearably saintly in the saccharine kind of way characters like his sometimes tend to have. And with the knowledge of the ending, the abbey scene and the kiss are even more bittersweet, making me teary-eyed every time.
The book is beautiful, too. If you read it, I'd love to know which ending you preferred (some aspects develop a little differently in the book).

Is it true that there is an edition of the book with Rufus on the cover? I didnĀ“t find anything on Amazon.

There is a marvellous reading by Rufus of an abridged version of the book available from Audible.
The Woodlanders, with its varied dialects, upper and working classes, educated and uneducated, together with the emotional content of the story, is a perfect showcase for Rufus's talents.
My only carp is that it is an abridged version.

I don't remember ever seeing these before. Thanks for posting PGG. I've put them in the screen caps thread so we can find them in the future.
