Oh my goodness - Rufus reading to me - for 2 1/2 hours - inside my head - i may never recover - thank the lord for the ipod. Some things were explained, some things were a little different. The ending, as read by the man, was sublime.

Oh numbat, I am crying just reading your words; this film really affected me and my heart ached for Giles. I haven't listened to Rufus read this, I don't know if I could take it.

Pen & Ellie, we're just hopeless romantics aren't we? This song had me sobbing this afternoon: Love is why i came here in the first place Love is now the reason i must go Love is all i ever hoped to find here Love is still the only dream i know And this one tipped me right over the edge: Come let me love you Let me give my life to you Let me drown in your laughter Let me die in your arms My husband thinks i'm truly going mad. Beautiful, beautiful Giles.........................

Beautiful, beautiful Giles......................... Oh numbat, now you have started me off!!! That second verse especially, John Denver singing those words with that beautiful voice that he had. I don't think you are going mad, I understand you completely. Men sometimes just don't get it. I used to be with someone that never, ever got me at all and thank goodness that time has passed. Now I have no one but I am happy and can do and say whatever I like!!!!

Thanks Ellie, & i agree, i don't think men do get it - nearly always!!!! But because i have resolved not to sob today (being Monday & everything), i give you "The Frenzied Sex Life of Gracie & Giles" Foreplay Hand Sex Eye Sex Lip Sex No Sex!!! Giles, listen to me (grabs his shoulders, shakes hard, slaps face), when the woman you love comes to your hut soaking wet & cold, you strip off her clothes & warm her with your naked body. Good god man, were you not paying attention when we watched Tristan & Isolde? ?? Higher Love has just arrived in my mail box - now i'm sure THAT will cheer me up!!!!

Really lovely, numbat. Thanks for the gorgeous pictorial sequence (and the simultaneously hilarious titles).
I hope you love Higher Love (aka Uncorked to me) as much as I did. Just a really gentle, warm film.
My husband gets it even less when I sob over happy endings. "But isn't that the way you wanted it to work out?"

SPOILERSI just saw the woodlanders yesterday evening (I would have done it while having supper but you know I am punished without supper for a week so I just watched the film , well I had a cup of wine but that doesn't count, does it? ;D). I knew the book (I hadn't read it) but I hadn't watched the film yet. As you had spoken so well about it I just waited untill it arrived (as all new fans I am gradually buying his work). I loved it. I cried too. Although I had avoided reading spoilers it just starts, and you know it is not going to end up well. It is really a very touching film, and certainly too short. All the cast is wonderful and they perform caracters that you can't blame for what they decide. As someone says above, it's lovely because there are not baddies in the film, none of them wants to harm. And Giles.... oh, Giles... you just love him in the first scene untill the last. As Gracie's father says, "he's an honest man", with the others and with himself. And obviously Rufus is wonderful playing him. So few words and he is able to say so many things by the way he looks, not only about Gracie but also when he stands for what he believe (when his house is demolished or in the road scene, when he denies to let the charriot pass)... wonderful. Well, and know I am waiting for T&I (oh, yes, don't get angry with me, but I haven't seen it yet!) I also know the story, but it hasn't been on TV here, and it is another film that I didn't want to watch online. I am beeing pacient, I think it will arrive next week!!!!

You are a very patient woman ofelia!!!! Make sure you go over to the T&I thread when you have seen it coz there's some very spirited discussion over there, hahahaha!!!!
Giles, Giles, Giles.............. you can't help crying just thinking about him. It's one of the saddest things i've ever seen. He's such a good man and he just doesn't deserve what happens to him does he?

And if you ever read the book, you'll cry for Marty, too (stupid, stupid Gracie).

After Giles, my favorite character was Marty. I could tell how much she loved him and he was completely blind to her love. I felt like shaking him after Gracie left him for the doctor and he stayed faithful to her while Marty pined for him.
Grace only went back to Giles when her marriage went sour and her husband only went back to her when Mrs Charmond died. That's what happened in the book, an ex lover killed her out of jealousy. And in the book Gracie did not turn her husband away, she took him back, like most women did in that time period, since she couldn't divorce him, anyway.
But, I bought this DVD and just love the movie, anyway, in spite of the above. It was a very sad movie and I cried, for everybody. There were no real villains, except for the selfish Lady Charmond.
