I also love happy endings, but this isn´t the kind of film for that.

Very intense for sure. The Impossible with Naomi Watts reminded me a bit of Vinyan. Similar, yet very different.

This picture was taken by Marcel Hartmann on 21 July 2007. I love his Vinyan photographs and I LOVE his Rufus portraits. His site is pretty complicated, the direct links haven't worked at all before, the way to the album is still rocky, but, for some mysterious reason, the pictures now are allowed to be posted. marcelhartmann.fr --> Enter --> Reportage --> click on the right arrow until you get Vinyan --> More --> the last photo is the Rufus pic It's worth to go there, because the photographs are very very beautiful!! The other Rufus picture in that album is one of my all time favourite Rufus photos. I know everyone knows it, I added just...umm...because I love it. vinyan-lefilm.be/gallery Some more. (The Rooftop has several threads on Vinyan, so you can see the pics elsewhere, I just want to make a biased collection of my favourites.) There is an interview with Emmanuelle Beart there - "RUFUS SEWELL He plays my husband, Paul. We had shared an absolute solidarity. At the beginning, we shared the same capacity, not for mourning, but for living with absence. During this whole period, I don’t remember having acted much. I slipped into scenes, into situations, always tied to him, like people clinging to one another. Later, we moved apart, because our characters moved apart."This was the first time when I went to cinema to see a Rufus movie. I still remember how excited I was. I was deeply impressed by the film. And Paul was gorgeous. Umm, I end my post with a rainy photo - Rufus is looking into the camera...

Great find, adina! Love that first pic, and I generally agree that he looked fantastic as Paul. Oh, what a beautiful man.

Thank you Adina! They are gorgeous pictures! A film with a disturbing topic, but beautifully filmed and acted. The link you posted does not work for me, although it is definitely the correct link. Weird. If anyone else has the same trouble, when I went to www.vinyan-lefilm.be/, I could access the main page and click on the Pictures tab and access the other materials too.

Fabrice du Welz has a new film to promote, and in this interview he is asked about Vinyan, and I think some of his answers might be added to this thread. www.film4.com/special-features/interviews/fabrice-du-welz-on-calvaire-vinyan-alleluiaYou shot Vinyan in Thailand. Was this a good experience?
The shooting was intense, that’s probably the greatest adventure in my life. We have not so much money to make that movie, and at that time I have a great ambition to make something very unique and peculiar, and I make some choices. The movie was a little bit – not badly received, but the reception was not quite what I supposed and expected it would be, and I was very, very sorry about that, and it makes me very sad for a long time.
Did you feel that it was misunderstood?
No. If I can’t make myself clear to the audience, that means I’m wrong, I’m wrong somewhere, so I need to work, and I need to deliver something that everybody can relate to at one point. You know what, it’s probably too experimental, in a way. I’ve tried to – I was refusing pity for my characters, especially at the beginning, I was very interested in metaphors, maybe it was a little bit too intellectual. In a way it’s very physical, and I liked so much working with the actors Rufus [Sewell] and Émmanuelle [Béart], and it was a great experience to go through. And I think that film is quite unique, it’s quite peculiar, it’s quite strange. I think it’s a very different movie from Calvaire because there’s practically no sense of humour in Vinyan, and in Calvaire there is a lot of what I think is dark humour, and it is quite a funny movie, just like Alleluia. But with Vinyan, I think maybe my eyes were bigger than my stomach, and I didn’t have the money to go through that. Vinyan was quite a journey. But you know, it’s done now – what can I say?
You said it has a very mixed reception. Did that affect your future filmmaking options and decisions?
Yeah, it affected me a lot. It took me a long time to understand that I need probably to be a little bit less – how I can say that? – autistic with my characters. (...) In Vinyan I was very obsessed with the visuals, and it’s a very visual movie, but sometimes it fails with emotions, and I said with Alleluia go for the character, give everything to the character.Hmm, Fabrice, don't be so sad, I liked Vinyan.
