I have come to the conclusion that it just 'is'...his whole persona....he oozes a depth of emotion and sexuality that overwhelmes me...he did it back in 1992/3 and he still does it to this day. AMEN!!! Uuugghhh and Rueful...OH MY GAWD don't get me started on beady eyed Tristan and his simpleton stare. I spent WAY to much of the movie yelling at mushroom boy to get off the screen and stop c**k blocking Lord Marke to enjoy it properly. GAWD

LOL--Mushroom boy. He is rather fungal, isn't he? But as I warned my dear friend Tipou some time ago, when she compared him to potatoes, be careful that the mushrooms of the world do not rise up against you to seek vengeance for the extreme insult.
Someone needed to tell him that moping around for 2 hours with watery eyes is NOT the way a professional actor conveys sadness! I will give the title of 2nd best actor in the movie (after Rufus, of course) to Sophia Myles for managing to feign any small amount of interest in him while Rufus was on the same set.

In this day and age of the tween idols getting all the attention, it's just nice to know that there's still a real man out there, scars and all.

you know what else makes him so appealing, aside from all the other complements thrown his way? Next time you pop one of his dvd's in, pay close attention to his inflections in his speech. He reacts like a real person would, not rehearsed, not affected, he is real all the time, every role. There is always something going on within him. He makes all others around him look even better, very unselfish of him don't you think? And he is always doing something with his hands. But truly and honestly I find his humour the most appealing and sexy.

I love the sound of Rufus's voice. As you say Peach, he comes across as so unaffected and reading some of his past interviews, he doesn't stand for any nonsense. His ability as an actor is such that he draws you right in, no matter what type of character he is playing, he is so believable, you just know that he 'is that person' at that moment in time. And I guess that is what makes an excellent actor, the ability to make you believe in a character and all the flaws, weirdness and deep emotions that are part of that character. Rufus is too overlooked as an actor in my opinion and he deserves far more recognition than he gets but then again, maybe he just wants to play it that way and is far more comfortable with his acting life being more 'low key'.
I once (I still do really) had a thing imagining Rufus as Heathcliff. I thought that would be an excellent role for him. Not just frilly, white open shirts, lovely naked chests and wild eyes and unruly hair but a deep, affected soul, driven by his despair and love for Kathy (who I imagined to be Kate Winslett, another superb actor). I sense a real deepness in Rufus, one who can play such a character as this because of his life experiences and also because he is Scorpio (they carry such deep sadness in their souls). Alas, my dream will probably never be a reality but I can use my imagination. He is a spellbinding actor and I appreciate his work very much. I hope to see him in something Shakespearean someday, I know that he would be phenomenal.

i notice - and i like - sexy as hell so i am with famke and rueful on this i guess Yes exactly! Sexy as Hell- well said! and I loved what rueful said: "The very tiny flaws help to keep his face, which is really so classically beautiful, alive and human." So engaging and interesting to stare at...watch. Men that are too "pretty" give me the willies....like Jude Law...EWWWW! Hand me a barg bag PLEASE. Give me a real man! Speaking of real men...OMG Lord Marke. He might be my fave Rufus now...(I had never seen Tristan & Isolde...can you believe that!?) You haven't seen t&i, good lord i recommend you order a copy asap I'm with you on the Jude law thing, he's so flat all the time don't you get a sense of him being a real bore?

I love his down to earth sense of humor, the way he expresses himself with his hands..(has anyone else noticed, when he's being interviewed when he's not flailing them around, that he sits his hands in his lap and fiddles like an impatient child) I guess i love everything about him, the imperfections make him unique and all the more attractive. He is beauty in its finest form.

Love Elliexx i could not agree more. early aggressive typecasting might have killed that unique opportunity in the bud - which is too bad, he wold have been the lawrence olivier type of heathcliff (he is my favourite to date). sigh

I'll see your Jude Law and raise you Matthew McConaughey. ICKKKKKKKKKKKKK!
You're right, Ellie, Rufus would have been superb if he had ever taken on the role of Heathcliff. It would never be just a surface portrayal, and he's so good at making unpleasant characters sympathetic. (And I do find both Heathcliff and Cathy unpleasant.) Now that Rufus is older, I think Mr Rochester would be perfect.
Anybody else read "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"? (If you haven't, I highly recommend it.) Rufus as Dawsey, yum (and by yum in this case I mean his incredible acting talents as well as his looks).
Kate, thanks for the great pics!

Now rueful, there is a character for Rufus to play, Mr. Rochester...oh, yes!! I know it's another period character and I have read in past interviews how he became fed up with frock coats etc but Mr. Rochester is such a tortured soul, Rufus would be superb. Maybe he himself would disagree but I can see it now....a remake of the story but modern day, as TOTS was done? I personally would love to see him in all his glory, frock coat and all, wounded, twisted up and in love with Jane Eyre...what a formidable Mr. Rochester he would make....sigh..

Here's a complete 180, I just saw an amazing movie, one I haven't seen in so long it's b&w and a goodie. It starred Ray Milland as an alcoholic writer, it's called Lost Weekend, I think it would be a terrific vehicle for Ruf. He has the range, and I think he's the right age for it as well. It's a bit depressing and full of angst, but it sure would cast him in a different light, and would be something so unlike he's done. It could easily be updated too. If you're interested you might want to rent the DVD, you'll not be disappointed.
