I don't know if you already saw that. From Ken Follett website. Filming of the eight-hour limited series of The Pillars of the Earth on location in Hungary and Austria will start on 22 June 2009. Ian McShane (pictured), Donald Sutherland, Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen, Sarah Parish, Hayley Atwell, Eddie Redmayne and Gordon Pinsent headline the star-studded cast for the US$40-million adaptation.
The series is directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Heroes, Saving Grace, Into the West). Mimica-Gezzan worked as Steven Spielberg’s first assistant director on Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List, sharing the DGA directorial awards for both films with Spielberg.
The novel has been adapted by award-winning writer John Pielmeier (Emmy winner Hitler – The Rise of Evil and Emmy nominated The Memory Keeper’s Daughter), who will also play the role of 'Cuthbert'.
The series assembles an impressive array of veteran producing talent, including Emmy-winner David Rosemont (Into the West, Door to Door); Sir Ridley Scott (pictured right, whose films include Alien, Thelma & Louise, Gladiatior, Black Hawk Down and American Gangster), Tony Scott (The Taking of Pelham 123), Rola Bauer (Ring of the Nibelungs), Michael Prupas (Human Trafficking), David Zucker (Numb3rs), Tim Halkin (Lost City Raiders) and Jonas Bauer (Impact), and Emmy nominated John Ryan (Hitler: The Rise of Evil, Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows).
The series is being produced by Emmy and Golden Globe nominated Tandem Communications (Ring of the Nibelungs, Impact, Lost City Raiders) and multi award-winning Muse Entertainment (Human Trafficking, Tales from the Neverending Story, Durham County) in association with Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe nominated Scott Free Films (CBS’s series Numb3rs, Emmy nominated minis The Andromeda Strain and The Company).............. www.ken-follett.com/news/index.html

Dreamer,
Thanks for the info on the web site. The more we can read about the upcoming "Pillars" the more we'll all appreciate it.

I hope this one is a winner for Rufus. He's not only yummy to look at, but also a great actor in my opinion. I think I will read the book, but I'm usually disappointed when the film slaughters the book. I know they have to cut down on the scenes, but why do some need to reinvent the plot?

I have begun reading the book and Tom Builder is a captivating character. And here in the US Shakespeare seems to be making a come back so perhaps the story will be well received. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Thank goodness Rufus is too old to play that absolutely awful William, given his history of being cast as the baddie!!! That's one character i'm glad he was able to steer well away from. I haven't got to the end of the book (i kind of lost interest after the first Kingsbridge wool market) so i don't know if he miraculously redeems himself in the end, but he is truly nasty.

Rufus told me they offered him the "conniving priest" role first and he turned it down. I just started reading the book and don't know how far I'll get, so I'm not sure which character that is. I may just wait and watch the series. I hate spoilers and I'm lazy, so that makes sense, doesn't it? Rai

Catdishy,
From what I've read, Hayley Atwell will play the part of Aliena.
Tom Builder's (Rufus) love interest is Ellen, to be played by Natalia Woerner. Remember, I am referring to the characters in the mini series. I have no idea what may be happening in Ruf's "real" life.
You may want to check the pages of this thread to find the links to articles about the series. You will find a synopsis of the story and the actors in the cast. Hope that helps!
