I hope I am not asking you to break rules but I thought during the interview for Blog TV Rufus mentioned some thing about independent films. Did he ever share with you what they might be. I am hoping he will not be baddie in those either and I am also hoping one of them isn't Usher unless the producers have more of a plot planned. If I am not supposed to ask this just tell me so. Apologies in advance.

Well I just finished "Pillars" (Whew, it was good, but very easily could have been edited down at least 100 pgs) and there is no doubt Rufus was just perfectly cast as Tom Builder, who is described as very tall, good looking, intelligent, industrious etc. I can't remember for sure (it was in the very beginning of this almost 1,000 pg book) but I think he is even supposed to have green eyes! Anyway, Tom is written as a complicated, sympathetic, earnest, fairly moral, hardworking man, who with great determination pursues his dream of being the master builder of a great cathedral. It will be interesting to see what they do in adapting the movie, because the book spans decades. Although Rufus is a good age to play Tom Builder, I think the character of the conniving priest, Waleran Bigod, starts out way younger in the book than Mcshane is now, supposedly just slightly older than Tom and many of the initial main characters. Well, it will be interesting to see what they do. Also, if the movie closely follows the book, the actors who play Jack and Aliena will see significant screen time, especially later in the movie--and thus need to be cast really well. The gal who plays Ellen, Tom's squeeze, is verrrry lucky if a certain woodland love scene from the book ends up in the movie--and--I can't really see why it wouldn't (yay) as it is integral to the story. What a fun project to look forward to!

As for Usher, it was a total surprise to Rufus, Dougray & Claire to see their names mentioned, so who knows if that will ever come to be. Rai

"Veeeery lucky in a certain woodland love scene", eh, Rufluvr? MY kind of scene LOL!
I've said a couple of times, I want him to play more romantic, heroic roles. He so has the looks, sex appeal, charm and talent.
I have always thought it more difficult to play the role of the hero. I think being "good" is harder to play than playing evil. The actor has to keep the good hero character interesting and human. Show the "temptation" without giving in to it. Be inspirational. And I think Rufus can handle it.

Yes rufluvr - i think he was described as having greenish eyes with brown flecks & i can't think of anyone else who has those very particular eyes!!! And i can't see how they could possibly leave the sex in the forest scene out

Oh, I am LATE at hearing this news! I'm so excited!
I love Ian McShane, too (huge Deadwood fan).

Travelover--Thought you'd be happy to hear some Rufluvin' scenes should be in the movie. There are really only two love stories in the book so I'd be totally surprised, not to mention utterly dissapointed, if Tom & Ellen's isn't fully fleshed out onscreen. Sorry, naughtycakes sometimes rears her ugly head. It's been a loong time since TOTS is my feeble excuse. Well, I do happen to know someone who also has green eyes with brown flecks--it's not THAT rare--but that person is short and female so would make a pretty funny looking Tom Builder!! I have to say, when I was reading the book and first read Tom's description I was thinking "Gawed!! this describes Ruf to a T!!! It's almost scary." Especially when he had just been sporting a beard fairly recently. Wonder if he did that for the reading to help garner the role? If so, it worked out nicely for him. That gives me an idea. What do y'all think should one wear/look like to hopefully garner the role of Rufus' love interest?? Ha, ha.

It really sounds wonderful, Rufluvr. I am so excited for him. AND for us! It's about time we got something like this cause it's been a while.
Wonder what one would wear to garner the role? Hmmm? My initial thought was to quote Marilyn Monroe when asked what she had on when she did her famous calendar - - - "the radio".
I've always seen him with a petitite blue eyed blond - - - just like me!
Visualizing the scene - well, I have a VERY vivid imagination, and for now I'll keep THAT to myself.

Well, there's more to the website as of today. Some audio comments from Follet and what looks like storyboard pictures. No mention of Rufus in the "Key Cast" section which has me a little worried. I hope this section just isn't complete yet and this isn't bad news.

Since they have not posted Jack yet, I do not think the credits are complete. Jack is definitely key cast and in fact Rufus name appears prominently when you enter the site.

OMG!! !! *Thinks: do we need to tidy anything up for our new audience?* They really are going overboard on that site, aren't they? Looks like it's going to be promoted VERY heavily - just think what things'll be liked when it's about to hit our screens. *Rubs hands in glee*. Judy, thank you for alerting us to this!

I thought the same thing, but then it turns out there are tabbed pages. If you look at the top, above Ian McShane, you'll find a tab for "Builders & Peasants" in both the characters and cast pages, and that's where Tom (and Rufus) are listed.
er, ummm, let's see, have I said anything naughty lately?
Thanks for the heads up, Wichi and Judy!

I also took a look at the Extended Synopsis (click on "Storyline" on the left) and it's interesting to see how the screenplay has been / is being adapted from the book. It doesn't appear that Tom Builder delivers the baby in the woods (as he did in the book). The synopsis says that he goes back to Ellen's cave and leaves Alfred and Martha to stay with Agnes while she's in labor. And that HOT, HOT, HOT scene between Tom and Ellen in the forest doesn't appear to be in the screenplay at all. I hope I'm wrong. Those would be two extraordinary scenes for Roof.
