Thank you, Sylvie, for taking the trouble to join so you could pass on that info - we do appreciate it. I like Ciarán very much and was looking forward to seeing him and Rufus in a film together again.
By the way, you might know this - I swear, while watching Rufus in Helen of Troy, that at one point (and very briefly), I spotted Ciarán in one scene. Do you know if he had an uncredited part in that? I've been wondering for years!

Hi all,
Wish I had some news for you, but the boy has been silent running. Funny about Ciaran Hinds. When Renata & I met Rufus after R&R in NYC, Ciaran was tucked in the corner of the coffee shop. I totally missed him. My friend Mary & her daughter had joined us and seems everyone saw him but me. He was doing The Seafarer on Broadway.
Have fun at the Zen Q&A, those of you who go! If you get to talk to the man afterwards, tell him the secret words are "****** ** ***". That haunted him during Macbeth. ;D

Lack of confirmation from Rufus and confirmation the other actor is not doing it makes me think this may not be true. I guess time will tell.

I think this is another Usher. I actually believe these independent film makers just throw everyone's name into a pot and see if they can get funding. Seems very unfair not to mention dubious.
IMDB is really not a good place to get facts unless it is after facts.

A lot of the info on IMDB is added by people submitting information, so it's only as good as the source where they read it. Like you say, vmaciv, maybe a wish-list turned into a we-have and it's snowballed. But if they did just put Rufus's name to help attract funding, that's a good sign, shows he IS appreciated by film-makers, despite what we sometimes think!

I read a synopsis of this book and it sounded very depressing to me. It might be better as a movie, but I really don't care for that kind of story. Also the critics seem to be very divided on it, they either loved it or hated it, no middle ground.

reformeddruid I did the same and agree totally. I do not know why Rufus would make this movie and I do not understand how a part like Carlos Grace could be considered a good part when in fact there does not appear to be much for Carlos to do.
I feel the same way about this as I did Usher. I am glad he is on vacation and I hope he enjoys himself too.

Let us know if it's any good Frannie. It might be one to add to my stack of books to read. Well I have now read "The Sea " I read the comments of vmaciv and reformeddruid so it was mixed feelings I started it. 1st. I am always unsure about Booker prize books . I always feel, maybe unjustly , that they are pretentious books written for pretentious judges. 2nd. I hate books that have 2 blank pages between chapters!!I do not want to pay for blank pages. The first 2 pages, I thought I am not going to be able to read this, but I persevered because who knows maybe Rufus may make it . It is very floridly written and I was not warming to the main character (Ciaran Hinds??). When Carlo Grace came into it, another downer, because the only way Rufus fitted the description was "Greying crinkly black hair". But I thought I was not going to let this beat me and so I went on to the end. Gradually I began to see the characters and place come to life . I began to see Carlo like Rufus, because of his character, and by the end I thought it could make a beautiful film. I 'll try not to spoil it for others, but Ciaran's part is of the story teller and he is looking back, so it would not be large part except mostly as a voiceover (and pain-in-the-neck... the character not Ciaran ). Carlo Grace (alleged Rufus part) is a flamboyant larger than life character which I could see Rufus getting his teeth into and playing splendidly. A sort of mature Petruchio. It is a sad book and I still don't know whether I enjoyed it, but maybe this is due to the style of writing and not the story. I do think that if they do make it as a film then it could be beautiful and both Rufus and Ciaran would be marvellous in it. If anybody else has read the book, I would be very interested to hear what you think.

Thanks for posting Frannie. I'm intrigued now. I may have to buy the book and make my own mind up. I wonder if it would be filmed like "Any Human Heart" has been with Jim Broadbent playing the older Logan Mountstuart looking back over his life. I've only seem part 1 but this looked quite well done. You got me at the mature Petruchio Frannie - No wonder you kept reading !

Well I finally read The Sea. It started off a bit slowly and it was a bit of a tale of woe. But it was beautifully written and the characters described in such great detail John Banville really brought them to life.
I had to smile every time a Carlo Grace came on the scene as I could completely see Rufus making a really good job of the role. Sadly there was not nearly enough Carlo Grace for my liking - I may be biased but he was the best character in the book for me.
I guessed most of the ending and actually had to speed read at the end. I'd just been told my plane was making an emergency landing after plummeting and flying back up several times a bit to quickly for my liking. I thought damn if I'm going to die I'm at least going to find out the outcome before I go. Mad of what hey !!! ;D

Just got some update from Ciarán but I don't know if Rufus Stewell is still on the project: "The Sea - is an ongoing project, they are hoping the funding will come together in the next twelve months or so, but nothing is definite."
