Thanks Sylvie for the update! I love Ciaran Hinds also, he is one of my favourite actors! I am wondering with all the controversy about whether a new series will be made of Zen what Rufus has in mind for doing in the future! I hope all will be revealed soon. Thanks Robela

Thans for the information Sylie. Rufus sounded very keen on this when I spoke with him in December so hopefully he's still on board. The role of Carlo Grace was a relatively small one in the book so I'm sure he'd have plenty of time for other projects such as Zen WHEN it gets picked up and the nice bit of theatre I requested. Well, I can hope can't I ? ;D

No he said he had agreed to do it but there were problems with people dropping out and he said he thought the book was really good. Hopefully if it takes off the screen writer with add a bit more to the role of Carlo Grace.

So let's keep our fingers crossed they will get the funding and Rufus is still on the project ... just re-read the thread and think the project sounds very interesting.

Inspired by this thread, I've borrowed the German audiobook from the library. I didn't expect too much from it as I had failed to finish one of Banville's other books some time ago, but I have listened to two out of six CDs by now and find it quite good. A little depressing maybe, rather quiet and thoughtful, and somehow extraordinary style of writing.
Carlo Grace really doesn't look a thing like Rufus the way he is described (in fact he's rather ugly and short), but he is an unusual character, stands out somehow, so that I can imagine Rufus playing him very well.
Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed even more that this project will finally fly!

I have recently finished reading The Sea I have to agree with you KMK on John Banville's writing style. Although obviously well written I struggled to keep going long enough to finish it. At the end the story did come together and I think maybe yes they could make a good film from it. I look forward hopefully to something positive coming for Rufus from this. I agree he does not match the description of Carlo Grace at all but they can do a lot in films and he is such a good actor. Lets hope though that the part of Carlo is bigger if they film it.

I'm finished with the audiobook now. I didn't really warm to Max somehow, and the overall tone is a little depressed, but still it was not bad either. Banville looks at people from a somewhat different angle which makes the characterisations quite interesting, and I liked the way he wrapped up the story (rather surprising to me).

I have recently finished reading The Sea. Didn't really enjoy the style of writing. I know it was well written but it didn't keep my interest and I struggled to get through it. Having said that the story came out in the end and I think it could make a reasonable film. Unless they make the part of Carlo Grace larger if Rufus played him he wouldn't be in the film very much. The description of Carlo Grace in the book is nothing like Rufus but then that doesn't really matter I suppose. It seems that this project is still a long way off in any case.

Yay It looks like this is going ahead after all!! I'm a bit confused about the Ciaran Hinds bit though. Maybe he had other commitments before. www.examiner.com/movie-news-in-national/rosamund-pike-gets-one-shotEnglish actress Rosamund Pike is in negotiations to star opposite Tom Cruise in the drama One Shot. Based on the best-selling novels by Lee Child, One Shot stars Cruise as Jack Reacher, a former military policeman who now travels around the country as a drifter, surviving on his military pension. Reacher is drawn in to a dangerous game when a sniper framed for murder seeks his help. If negotiations are successful, Pike will play defense attorney Helen Rodin who teams up with Reacher to find the real murderers. Pike recently completed production on Clash of the Titans 2, in which she plays the goddess Andromeda. She will next begin filming the British drama The Sea with Ciaran Hinds and Rufus Sewell. Production for One Shot is expected to begin later this year with filming taking place in Pittsburgh. Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie) is directing the film from his own adapted
