It is about 3-5 minutes (Rufus minutes, mind you) longer and I just got the Region 2 version. I haven't watched it in some time but I do like Rufus' performance. He just plays the role so well. I love the restaurant scene and his total argumentative nature with Daniel. With regard to the actress, I did not get the attraction to her from Frank, Daniel and Laurence. Unless it was that like attracts like mentality.
Why she wanted brooding Laurence, I have no idea. Other than the fact that Frank is a total drunken loser and hadn't bathed, changed his clothes or brushed his teeth in what, weeks?, he had humor, a personality and survival instincts. She did gravitate towards him for his whiskey and allowed the drunk to buy her coffee. Daniel, she got him for the cash-in on the first class ticket and a free hotel room, liquor, dinner and flowers - doesn't it paint a very shallow picture of American women? Weak and wimpy as well!
Frank should have come to Minnesota - considering his pathetic character and all his loser qualities, he would have been starring in Hollywood in no time.
The other real neat thing about the Region 2 version are the extras: They have all the trailers, actor bio's and sub-plots (I forget what they labels this set of extras - what it is, is a collection of the scenes with different characters. There are about 4-5 different combinations). The run about five minutes and simply pluck out the Rufus scene's - obviously, the ones I went for. I was impressed - much more than the Illusionist provided in their DVD.

Her tirade at the end was unwarranted. Poor as she was, how did she scramble the cash to fly to England before she met Daniel? She takes him for the cash from the first-class ticket she turns in and the hotel night, scum-sucks Whiskey off a drunk in a park and agrees to go for coffee with him, running away because he says his perfect partner for sex is himself. Yet she falls for mopey-dopey boy who teaches bridge to a bunch of old, rich women.
Yet she has the nerve to insult Frank because the only love letters he gets are from 6 year olds when his old movies are rerun. Why wasn't she on Laurence who spent his time with a bunch of old rich women. At least Frank had a career - Laurence played Bridge. Then she weepingly squeals out how at least she is trying to change her life. By going to an overpopulated city (one of the most expensive on earth) in a country that you must live in for a year or more or get permission to get employment in? Please!
Ray Winstone is in this film. Fiennes is an okay actor but over-rated. Finally, some reference in the past has been made to Rufus' teeth which I have never caught sight of - you do not have to look carefully at Tom Hollander to see that he is in dire need of some cosmetic dentistry.

Just saw this movie on the weekend. I love the part in this where they are in the art gallery, and Frank goes one way and Martha goes around the other way, and Frank starts laughing at some statue. Funny. Apart from having Rufus in this movie though, i wouldn't have bothered. It was pretty crappy story line and the actress and Joseph Finnes were mediocre at best.

Were you able to see the uncut version or were you forced to watch the dreadful version they released in the States?
It wasn't a wonderful film but the R2 version was certainly the better.

I thought Ray Winstone was the best thing in the movie, besides Rufus & Tom Hollander (who I always find amusing.)

I'm guessing I've seen the American Version. It was called "The Very Thought of You", but in R4 Australia Format. How much different are the two??

Lovely, frothy, funny, feel good, film Don't look for depth , just relax and watch 3 superb actors at the height of their abilities act comedy effortlessly . ( 4 if you include lovely Ray Winstone playing against type.... yes let's make that 4..) Lots of LOL. minor niggle ... Monica Potter ...not quite up to the men's standard ( she's a poor man's Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz) but that 's being a bit petty. 2nd minor Niggle ... this is personal.. I don't like the Fiennes brothers ,in fact I actively dislke them but I do not dispute their acting ability so,.... niggle niggle... Laurence should not have got the girl. Another master class from Roofie on how to play comedy . No wonder he likes to play it .. His precision. timing and deftness of touch. the ease in the role Why has nobody ever put him Cary Grant type comedies or comedic-thrillers (i.e. N by NW or Charade) He would be brilliant

This was the first Rufus film I ever saw. I saw it in the cinema and I have to say if it hadn't been for Rufus and Ray Winstone I would have left. Rufus was hilarious and gorgeous (obviously). The storyline is very weak, as if an american woman would take a room of a stranger, whisky of another stranger and fall in love with the clumsy grumpy confused looking stranger and all in a day. And okay Ray Winstones bit was funny but what would your attitude be if one of your neibours (who you'd never met before) rang your doorbell in the early hours of the morning? I know I wouldn't invite them in for coffee and a chat. Bizarre to say the least. Thank goodness for Roof. And I would have chosen Frank (however smelly and drunk he was)

Whatever one thinks about The Very Thought of You (and I happen to like it a lot) I'm sure we are all in agreement that Rufus' portrayal of Frank was funny as hell in the film, and believable and sad too. He's such a damn good actor, ain't he?

Ok, we were talking about this on another thread but i can't remember where now so thought i'd move it here. The story so far though, is that despite the fact that the version of MMFD&L that i bought from Amazon.co.uk (the red box version) is R2 and called MMFD&L, it has most of the conversations containing swear words dubbed over and, as i have now discovered, it also has some parts cut out!!! So, again from Amazon UK, i bought a new copy (in a half pale blue, half white box). It has the same rating, is the same region and apparently is the same running time, but it is a different version!!! The issue isn't just the dubbing, but also the editing out of parts of conversations for no apparent reason. Just as one example (and there are many), at the very end after Frank & Daniel have been fighting and they are sitting at the bar, they walk away from the bar and continue their conversation. On the red box version, the conversation ends before the whole bit about the french actress and Frank going back for another audition. Why i don't know, but it does!!! And the scene with the three of them in the restaurant is both dubbed and edited!!! So now i'm wondering if the red box R2 version isn't in fact the R1 version (ie, The Very Thought of You) repackaged. Anyhow, the blue and white version is much, much, much better so if any one doesn't have it and is thinking of buying it, don't buy the red box version!!! In fact i think i may go to Amazon.co.uk and leave a comment to that effect on the red box version page! F***, fancy those b*****ds doing that to me! Do i still say the bit about me with breasts though, coz i think that's a really good line. I hope they didn't edit that out...........

Ah numbat - cheery news you got your undubbed copy of MMFDL. ;D I really enjoyed this film. It's a real glass of wine feet up belly laugh kind of film to me. Rufus is fabulous as always and Ray Winston also made the film for me - just hilarious, everyone I've shown the film have also enjoyed it (it's had quite a few viewings in my house).
