I don't think I knew there was a difference in the versions (which is what I get for not reading this thread before buying, I guess). I got mine cheap when a nearby Blockbuster went under, so I shouldn't complain too much, but how annoying to find that I don't get Frank in his full swearing glory!

I saw this movie 2 times on television, everytime by a happy accident. Frank (Rufus) is my favourite character in it. He's so funny and also looks scruffy in it. But it suits him very well ;-)
Now I got the DVD. I'll have a great evening today! ;-)

I have always found this film very fun to watch. Rufus is sadly endearing as well as hilarious in so many scenes. Tom Hollander was fabulous too. The less said about Feines the better. One other reason I'm fond of this film is that part of it was filmed in Minneapolis. The retro-cool Murray's steak house was right across from where I worked in downtown Mpls and I went there from time to time. Love that place and it was fun to see it's cameo in the film, that was such a surprise the first time I watched it. Also, there's a possibility I met some of the crew, when they filmed here. We were told they were filming for a movie right outside the store I worked (never heard the title of it though) And I do remember helping some people from the movie crew shopping for clothes for this film back in the mid-nineties. but also one guy I rang up did have a British accent, and seemed to be shopping for himself. Can't say for sure it was Tom Hollander, but it did look like him! Anyway, I also remember a few days later a crabby-snarky assistant type came back to return a ton of clothes without tags (which was a hassle, and some of it wasn't even from our store and is why I probably remember the whole movie- crew thing in the first place) The only thing that gives me pause that it was maybe NOT the TVTOY crew, but for a different movie, is that the timing doesn't seem right. IMDB says The Very Thought of You movie came out in '98, and I was working at another place by mid '96 for sure so this crew I saw would have been in MPLS '94-95' or earlier which seems too early for a '98 release film. Oh well, I'll never know.

blimey ruflvr I wonder if it was MMFD&L ? Don't you remember a long black coat ? Or some khaki or was is kaky pants ? My opinion is much unchanged on this one. I love the way it flashes back in time (something that often annoys me in other films) but essential for the plot in this one. I cried with laughing at Ray Winstone. A really easy to watch film with a really feel good factor. Have to say she picked the wrong guy - but any dumbo that came to the UK with $30 cash and no place to stay.... what more can I say ? She's going to be attracted to a drip and not a gorgeous funny, full of character guy like our Frank IMHO !

Watched MMDF&L Saturday night with a friend and her daughter and we all had great fun. There was just the tiny problem that sometimes it was difficult to read the subtitles in time.
It may sound trivia to all with English as native language, but compared to other (English/Rufus) films the actors often talk really very fast, e.g. when Frank drones on Lawrence about Daniel and the actress....
Nevertheless we enjoyed MMDF&L very much.

I found this one like a good lite afternoon snack and I found the enlightment from Rufus' character. My favorite scene was when frank and Lawrence were walking in to the restaurant to meet Daniel; he made the F word sounds appropriate....he said it flawlessly and guiltlessly (if its even a word). I like Tom and its so much fun to watch both of them get in to hissy fits of their love - hate friendship through out the movie then at the end they're the ones with each other. All said, its not himself with breasts but I think for Frank; Daniel is ok too......
Frank in the bus : " I love my mathah "

I decided to watch "Martha ..." yesterday because I was so frustrated by the snow Quite amusing and funny. It's not truly realistic, but I don't expect that from light rom-coms like this and enjoyed the plot twists. All three guys did a good job, whereas I wasn't quite satisfied with Monica Potter's performance (but not so much that it spoiled the film for me). Rufus is great as grumpy Frank, cynical and a bit tragic with all his wasted talent. He's a nuisance (and he knows it), but still he makes you want to love him and bring him back on track. Again I loved watching the changing emotions on his face, as he does have some tender moments. And that chuckling laugh of his is just so cute! A nice thing on the side was the interview on my DVD, Rufus sitting in some park with the grass matching his wonderful eyes

Several years ago I went to the Dell restaurant in Hyde Park (I think that's the one) just to imagine Roof sitting there !!!!!!!!!! Perhaps our next Rooftop meet up should be in Hyde Park.

I wondered for a bit whether it might have been the restaurant/teahouse in the park in Russell Square, but I think you're right. I haven't been in London for far too long - I'd like to have an extra reason to go there!

Just watched it again today, ofcourse I rewind Frank's f-word scene....I never forget how flaunty it was said and it always me up ;D I noticed this one on DVD didn't carry the scene where Frank yanked those yellow flowers out of the ground to give to Martha...that's too bad.

I have just re-read my comments about my film and have realised that it looks like I didn't enjoy this film. I did, and Frank reminded me of an ex in this, he also had gorgeous eyes that could see into your soul and he was a Scorpio!! Anyway I regress. I mentioned before that the storyline was weak well that still stands but O do love this film and I do dig it out when I am feeling down. Frank is hilarious and I would have gone for him, Lawrence was just a bit to drippy for me and Daniel was to boring.

Got that film today from Amazon.uk. ( that was quick - ordered it Monday, it was shipped off Tuesday afternoon and I received it today - and I live in Switzerland) Anyway - had a crappy day at work and was in the mood for something light. This was perfect - I would have liked it also without Rufus in it. It's not really a film that stays with you neither does the part Ruf plays but it's a lighthearted, funny, romantic comedy - the perfect film after a long day with annoying colleagues. Loved the close up shot of Rufus in the small featurette interview with him. He looked yummy.

Mr. Kate is ready for a Ruf-athon - he wanted to know which of my Rufus DVDs had a German soundtrack and has already watched three films with me Yesterday he chose "Martha". And although he's still struggling to admit that Rufus is great, the parts that made him laugh the most were Frank's I liked Monica Potter a lot better this second time, Joseph Fiennes is still nice and sweet as Laurence and Frank is absolutely hilarious. I love his fits of mad ranting and the "who's got the harder life" contest with Martha And despite the scruffy clothing he looks great It's not a very brainy, artsy film, but a nice feel-good movie without too much kitsch. And in comparison to "The Holiday", which I saw the day before, it's much better paced and written. I like the way the layers of the story are peeled apart. Also love the shots of Rufus in the interview with the grass matching his eyes so nicely

By the way, found the end credits lovely with all those photos of the three friends.
Does anyone know if those pics can be found anywhere?
Oh, and the German voice he's got on this film is awful ... and of course his laugh is irreplaceable ...
