Just a Ruf Reference in Entertainment Magazine (April 13, 2007) that I liked.
Page 67, they list Cold Comfort Farm on TV for 4/10/07. Here is what they wrote:
8:30-10:05pm Cold Comfort Farm Sundance, TV-PG
Or you could make time with a Jane Austen flick. But when did you last see Rufus Sewell in one of those?
I just liked it.

Just rented this movie from Netflix and saw it for the first time over the weekend. My husband fell right to sleep, but I loved it! Then TIVO automatically taped it for me yesterday because I have Rufus on my wishlist, so even though I had to send Netflix their dvd back, I got to watch it again. All the nuances of his performance are so much more appreciated the second time around.

This movie is one wonderful moment after another, and I'm sure I must have missed quite a few on first viewing, what with being distracted by the subtitles, which I often needed in order to pick up the dialogue. I was just watching the scene after Flora flees the church service (LOL!) and ends up in the tea room with Mr. Mybug. How voluptuously odious he is! I hadn't noticed that he was spitting in her food, and the delicate dismay she showed, trying to move her plate out of range, and then actually covering her cup with her hand. ;D
What a brilliant cast this is, and brilliant performances. We have this book in the house and I've never gotten around to reading it, but will certainly make a point of it now.
Rufus certainly played his part with relish! I admit to being a bit confused by Seth and his evident bitterness. Do we assume he was badly hurt by a girl at one point? Or is he merely absorbing romantic fancies from all of those movies he's seen? I really enjoy the Beckinsale character, and her steady way of dealing with all the absurdities she encounters.
And the recurring 'golden orb'. ;D

i think that the character were only supposed to reflect the kind of characters seen in period books of this time. the book is a parody of those. hence the seth character (i found it cute that rufus plays a parody of many roles he had played before), the pointless mystery set by the old aunt who saw something terrible in the shed, the angry preacher, the ambitious and modern young woman who wants to set the family right, and so on. i had not noticed mr. mybug's spitting. well, i guess i have to see that one again. not too painful, its such a fun movie. what surprised me the most is how john schlesinger might have been drawn to this project, he was not known for light comedy, i believe...

This is great fun, I've seen it a couple of times, and the casting is superb. I love the scebe towards the end, when Flora directs Seth to move into the light when she's talking to the American talent scout whose looking for fresh talent. Ian McKellan was hysterical as well. I don't remember the spitting either, I'll have to watch it again (what a hardship that will be).
I have the book as well, but haven't read it as of yet but it's on the list.

Ian McKellan was hysterical as well. Yes! And what a magnificent voice he has! That bellowing in the church was wonderful.

I saw him perform on Broadway many years ago, in a one man show of sorts, he was doing all sorts of things, talking about his craft, Shakespeare, great fun. At the end of the performance he invited audience members to join him on stage, I didn't have the guts to but my sister did, he gave them a direction and at the moment he uttered a word they were all to collapse on stage. It was terrific. And what energy he had too.

I love this movie! The cast, characters and comedy of it all. ... The whole church scene with the quivering and burning made me laugh so hard. The old woman always repeating the same lines.... the wonderful way Kate's character changes everyone's lives for the better and so subtley.... Seth with his obvious discomfort in the tux and of course.... well, Rufus can pump my well any day. ;D

2007, about little after after 1am; I couldn't sleep so I clicked onDemand channel and there CCF was listed, I didn't even know Rufus was in it till the opening credits rolled. That was exciting! Brilliant casts made the characters, some memorable quotes and scenes..... Love the way Seth swayed back his body when Flora asked him to fetch her the thread, his excited boy look while talking about those actresses and the way his left nose hole (or nose left hole?) closed up sucking in proud air on his way to Hollywood... but most of all: I love the scebe towards the end, when Flora directs Seth to move into the light when she's talking to the American talent scout whose looking for fresh talent. Yeah....that one is my favourite. The arm-pit acting: makes me ......reminds me of you ladies Now I got me own DVD

Very funny, that one, and a great cast. Unfortunately the version I bought contained German soundtrack only, so I got myself a Swedish DVD with the original sound. I'm looking forward to hearing sexy Seth speak in his own voice Ian McKellen is such a hoot as the fanatic preacher. "There is no butter in hell!" Also loved the old lady with her woodshed mystery and Stephen Fry as that strange Mr. Mybug. All the scenes in the church were so hilarious - both McKellen preaching and Elfine's wedding. So funny when Adam (?) let go of the organ bellows to gawp at the bride and the wheezing rendition of that Bach piece faded out Sometimes parodies tend to be overdone, but this one gets the tone absolutely right with an ironic twist. The colouring of the film makes it feel like a fifties or sixties movie, liked that too. Only the music was too loud at times, drowning out the dialogues (at least in the German version). Lovely how Flora saw the good in all those hillbilly figures and slowly, gently brought them to understand that she didn't want to bring about all those changes because she was arrogant but because she wanted to help. Somehow she won all of them over at some time, especially Ruben - that was sweet, him wanting to marry her! And Seth is gorgeous, of course. Whoa. I'd dig a well in my garden this very moment if I got a Seth Starkadder to drain it Another character beautifully played. I loved seeing those eyes lighting up and the way he holds himself changing when he talked about acting and cinema, making the viewer realize that there was more to Seth Starkadder than just being a farm worker with a dirty face and slouched posture. Also liked the birthday party a lot, despite looking a bit uncomfortable in his tux and having a rather unorthodox dancing style, he seemed to have no trouble charming the girls there

With you all the way, KMK!! I love Ian's preaching too, actually could see that he'd make a burnin preacher!!! I love the way Judith called Seth Libertine and she had this shrine made for him.... I like the way they show the bride's side enjoying (well... more like savaging) the nice cutlets then the groom's side (mom) tried to swallow a pocket pie next to jiggling jellos. Clash of two classes! The way Ruf ate that porridge, the way he chewed and reached for that piece of bread...really exciting and turned on my appetite. He's the kind that I want to sit next to and just watch him eat and let him get a crush on my plate and say, "Are you done with that?" And Seth is gorgeous, of course. Whoa. I'd dig a well in my garden this very moment if I got a Seth Starkadder to drain it Don't worry, KMK....spring will be here before you know it. ;D
