What connects Rickman and Rufus is the amazing range of roles each is willing to take on - they both resisit type-casting. They go for the roles and damn the medium. Isn't this exactly what Rufus is trying to do?

It is that, but it was very interesting as well....I hate to say that he tortures her (although I do think there is a bit of physical torture, along the lines of fingernails...sorry if the thought makes anyone besides me squeamish!) but most of it is psychological. One part I remember quite clearly, he is questioning her, and he is eating a whole head of garlic and speaking very close to her face and the smell of it is really bothering her....anyway, I found it interesting enough that I remember it after all these years.

I was also going to recommend "Truly, Madly, Deeply" if Meg hadn't seen it. It's one of my favorites (bring a hankie). Closetland sounds interesting (if a bit disturbing). I looooove Truly Madly Deeply. I cry every single time I see it but it's a wonderful cry. It's such a good story and he's so good in it. I love the bit where his friends begin to come over and watch movies ;D I saw Closetland a couple of years ago when I had a crush resurrection (back when my crush was new, youtube wasn't around!) and I thought it was very interesting. Not one I would've bought, but still good. I think I've seen almost all of Alan's work. Love Actually is one of my absolute favourite films. You're right in saying that Rufus and Alan are similar in the way that you know if Alan is in a film it's going to be good, and even if it isn't good, you'll still leave the cinema smiling because he was good. I think that goes with Rufus perfectly. I would've skipped Galaxy Quest altogether had Alan not been in it. One of my favourite films of his is another one he stars in with Sigourney Weaver called Snow Cake. They're both wonderful in it, and the story stays with you. I highly recommend it if none of you have seen it.

When I think of Diehard, I *always* think of Rickman's character. I also cannot think of Robin Hood without thinking of his portrayal of the Sheriff (Bruce and Kevin Who???)- especially the "spoon line." I haven't been able to see TMD, because I can't find a copy! (And the one that I ordered (VHS tape- no less- I was THAT desperate) last summer was stolen off of the mail bench of my apartment building.)
I think the British actors'/actresses' ability to move between mediums and to express themselves well in any of them really does distinguish them from American actors. My friends and I are always moaning about why we seem to like so few of our own American actors. I don't know... it really feels like a "craft" when you watch the Brits, as they create themselves into these characters, which are so well drawn, and they can just express themselves with their eyebrows or simple sneers.
And if Rufus, Rickman, and Jason Isaacs were in a movie together, well... Opa! :^D

Joyce, I agree with what you mentioned about "movie stars" vs true actors. Well said keftiugirl! Since becoming a Rufus fan, I really havent paid much attention to anyone elses work lately. He has spoiled me!

Yeah, I also saw it once and it was impressive performances from both actors. Meg, I agree that´s one of my favorite movies with Alan Rickman as well. There are many great British actors but we must be patient now.

I'll throw Jason Isaacs in the mix. I do LOVE me some Jason Isaacs.
Oh, and isn't Rickman starting a run on Broadway in a new play this fall? I think so.

I think so. would almost be tempted to try to make a run north for that, but i'm saving every extra penny to cross the pond instead. if i can't see roof, at least i can luxuriate in the opportunity to hear lots of other charming deep british voices for a while.

I know. Seeing Rickman on stage would be fantastic. I think Alan and Rufus have the sexiest voices ever. The thought of listening to the two of them have a long conversation makes me swoon. Ear candy for sure...both of them.

I once had Alan Rickman and Patrick Stewart sitting right behind me in a theatre in London!!!! Talk about voices!!! All I needed was Rufus to my right (hubby was to my left)... ;D

Oh my goodness, add Benedict Cumberbatch to that mix and I'd be over the moon!

I know what you mean - Benedict's a great actor - he's got stage presence. Also came across Bill Nighy once, down Picadilly in London, sadly Rufus-less!

You know what...I just answered a post by Frannie in the Music, Movies, etc. thread on a new film called "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" which stars yet another actor who makes films good just because he's in them. Gary Oldman. I don't think any of us has mentioned him or put him into the list of considerations and I'm really starting to wonder.... ;D David Thewlis might be another good one to add to the mix as well. <gasp> Bob Hoskins too! Oh my gosh, all these choices, and what I love about it is that Rufus is more than good enough to act alongside such talented men anytime he wants. That's so awesome! ;D
