It's just occured to me that I would really love to see Rufus do Larry in Closer on stage. I'd like to see him take an absolute, self-serving sh*t and add depth and warmth to him. oooo. Now that I've said it, I want to see it so badly I can taste it. That's a little fantasy that will keep me going all week... Ever since seeing Closer on film, I wish they would have chucked Clive Owen and got Rufus to play Larry. I mean, I like Clive Owen in it but this part would have been PERFECT for the Roof.

I've thought the same thing, Uke..........Rufus would have done an amazing job. I'm a big Clive Owen fan and I loved him in Closer........but there's something about the way Rufus pulls a character together, I do think he could have done a little better job!

Quoll, you're right. Rufus and Freddie both went to West Thames College in Hounslow. Also, I seem to remember that some reviewer or other said that Rufus in TOTS was like a cross between Rik Mayall and Freddie so there must be something in it.

Clive is one of my favorites, but it has nothing to do with his acting. Rufus would make an amazing Larry and for me it has everything to do with his acting...

How about a re-make of John Fowles' "The Collector"? He has the innocent beauty that Terence Stamp had which can convey sympathy for the troubled mind which lies beneath. He may be on the mature side for this role now, but he pulled it off as a young Charlie and a 29 year old in R & R, and he is looking rather fine these days. I'm not big on re-makes but I think Rufe could add more layers and something of his own to this role.

Oh yes. That was a tremendous role. John Fowles always writes such interesting and complex characters. But I think you're right, it may call for a younger man. On stage Rufus might do it but in film I think he has a worldliness and maturity that is beyond it.

Granted, I don't know this character that you are talking about, but I don't think Rufus looks his "almost 40" age at all. I think he can get away with playing much younger than he is. Maybe not a 20 year old, but I think he can pull off 10 years or so. I also think that, since he is so talented, people will be drawn in by his portrayal and might not look so much at how old he looks. JMHO, of course! Michelle

I agree with you about how he looks but he doesn't "feel" young and innocent. The Collector is somewhat naive and feels innocent. Rufus might be able to pull something like that off on stage because there isn't a camera jammed into his face but on the screen... probably not. It has nothing to do with his acting, it has to do with what life has done to him and how it's written in his face. Sometimes when I look at the early pictures of him, I'm not sure he was ever naive enough to play the Collector. The character kidnaps a woman and holds her hostage, not to hurt her but hoping she'll fall in love with him. He gets more unhinged as the story goes along. It's an interesting study in obsession and is the basis for all of similar stories you see today. Terrance Stamp is terrific and creepy, yet somehow likable. Rent it if you haven't seen it. It's worth a watch.

That certainly does sound interesting! I looked it up......1965, I doubt I'd find it to rent anywhere (we don't do Netflix)........but I might just buy it if I found it really inexpensively.
I guess I'm not seeing what you mean by Rufus not "feeling" young and innocent. I think he has that, but then, not having seen the film you're talking about, I may just not "get" it!
Thanks for the info.........might have to look for this one, I really do like films like that!

I think some of the traits of Freddie (the main character in 'The Collector'), are very similar to those of Tim in 'Dirty Weekend'. By this I mean his worldly innocence, yet his obvious disgust with himself at the way his thoughts manipulated by a woman he clearly both worships and despises. Also, his intense driven-ness, which Rufus is a master at. This character is creepy in the extreme because he is so human and you are left thinking that with a couple more screws loosened he could be any one of us or someone we know. He looks so normal and almost cherubic. Who knows? With a bit of kind lighting and the wind in the right direction maybe he could do it. I'd like to see him in a psychologically challenging role, anyway.

yup I agree except Tim isn't innocent either and I think Freddie is--or at least naive. Tim is just... creepy in a lot of ways. But you know I told someone else that I kept thinking she'd sneak into the house and he'd wakeup and they'd reach an "understanding"--at least for a little while. lol!~
Nevertheless Rufus was 25 or 26 when he played Tim.

I'd like to see him play Logan Mounstuart from William Body's novel ANY HUMAN HEART...if that ever becomes a movie.

He has never played a cop before (as far as I know) in an action-type film. It would be totally different from any other role if he is seeking variety. I do not mean a cheap remake of a corny American bad TV show from the seventies - I think we remade all that trash already. Maybe someone can create a brand new character complex enough to be worthy of Rufus' time. Of course he would star in it rather than be a seven minute filler.

I love the idea of him playing a cop! Have we seen him as a doctor (I admit there are a few of his works I haven't seen yet)? I watched "Empire of the Sun" not too long ago........I would like to see Rufus do something on that order as well. I enjoyed "Dark City" so it would be fun to see him in another sci-fi/psychological thriller films. I'd love to see him with Clive Owen, that would be just plain fun!
