He was pretty good in his very early films, until his ego and personal demons got the better of him.

Yes, and Diner, which was a good little film too, to go back to the thread name.

I LOVED RUMBLEFISH. it really was a touching movie for me, because i was always doing things like by big brother did them, and making choices to reflect his (mistakes included), he was totally my idol - and he was trying to make me understand that it was not always bright to do that - he took me to see the movie, and, you know, i understood the message. my big brother is a sweet guy.

My fave is of course 91/2 weeks...dreamt about him for weeks afterwards. But yeah, interesting guy. Was a boxer before his early film career and went back to boxing after, demons notwithstanding.

Explains what happened to his face. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but he was attractive enough and had a lot of charisma. Now he sure looks like he took a few beatings.

IMHO, Terry Gilliam is pure genious. I saw Brazil when it opened, it was amazing to see on such a big screen. I'm a huge Monty Python fan and have always admired his animation, damned funny stuff.
Not sure if this is considered a small film, but Michael Mann's "Manhunter" the precurser to all the Hannibal Lecter films, was superb. Brian Cox, in a small but outstanding performance will chill you to the bone, simply unforgettable, and a very young William Petersen, saw this the first go round it made an impression on me then. The film is quite stylized and a bit dated not but those performances of Petersen and Cox are a knockout. Was re-made almost verbatim with Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins. Sorry but Brian Cox was better.

I was about to agree with you, peach, about Manhunter, but then I realized I've never seen it! I was thinking of To Live and Die in LA, another amazing William Peterson performance.

just saw "mr. brooks" with kevin costner & demi moore, these two are better in it than they've been in a while and there is william hurt & marg helgenberger as well, both excellent real delight, really good little movie, great story and suspense there seems to be an opening at the end for a sequel, i hope to god it will happen, but apparently the movie did not do that well, so maybe not

Haven't seen that yet, I do like Costner. I haven't read any mention of Big Night, with Stanley Tucci and Tony Shaloub and a very young Marc Anthony, it's a wonderful love story of two brothers, sweet and heartbreaking. It was Tucci's project and it's done with heart. I'm Italian so it rang true to me, esp. the relationship of the two brothers. The second little gem is My Beautiful Laundrette, saw this in it's original run, and that's when I first spotten Daniel Day Lewis, in a word, wonderful. Good story too with fine acting performances all around. I'd definitely reccomend both films. I own a copy of Big Night and saw it again very recently and it still holds up. A word to the wise. Don't see the film on an empty stomach.

Tucci, went to school with my sister, he was two years ahead of her, he saw alot of action in college, shocking, anyway if you like dark and creepy films, there is a really good one called Close Your Eyes, with Goran Visnjic and Shirley Henderson, it's a moody piece and a little gory but I liked it. Almost gothic in a weird sense.
