Hated the girl with the pearl earring, sorry, U am a huge fan of Colin Firth but the pace was unbearable, I'm like get on with it already. Paint the damned picture. I'm 200% with you there, Peach - I saw it with a group of friends and they were all raving about it afterwards. It was all I could do to stay awake.

I remember hearing about The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill, but it came out when I had a very small child and almost never went out to the movies (the early to mid-90s are mostly just a blur to me). I'll put it on my list of movies to catch up on.

This week I saw some great films. Slumdog Millionaire was worth sitting through a few tough scenes. Great child actors and magnificent photography , score and editing. My Brother is An ONly Child with the fabulous Elio Germano is totally captivating. And I enjoyed the BBC release of The Buddha of Suburbia...Naveen Andrews is a joy to watch.

I enjoyed watching THe Visitor the second time with the commentary on. Richard Jenkins and Thomas McCarthy added another filmmaking layer . And of course, I loved that it was shot in New York. The main actors gave tremendously engaging performances. yes, but then again, richard jenkins is God, so i am not surprised. i have to see that one. I am so excited Jenkins got an oscar !!!!

I just saw The Winslow Boy, Nigel Hawthorne and Jeremy Northam (he's fine) what a good movie, don't think it did much business in the states but it was good.

Where do I start, Gosford Park, good movie all around, Emma (wonderful), Bobby Jones-Stroke of Genious (it's about golf, but he's nifty, specially in period clothes), An Ideal Husband and what's this a connection to our green eyed beauty, he's in Carrington. Also in Amistad and The Invasion (remake of the 50's movie).
I've seen him in all of these and some PBS stuff on my local public television, he's quite good and a pleasure to watch. He's on IMDB for sure. Let me know what you think.

2 good movies recommended for the fantasy/sci-fi crowd 2 movies by terry gilliam, another unsung genius, imho
#1 TIME BANDITS: i was reminded of it by yesterday's traumatizing viewing of Helen of Troy. you see, in Time Bandits, sean connery plays a gorgeous, brave and totally hot agamemnon. very much unlike rufus' agamemnon, not even close in term of personality, but as looks come, if i had to chose between the both of them, i would definitely take both. anyway, its a very inventive and funny little movie, fast-paced, with a great cast, and, what can i say... it bears gilliam's magic.
#2 BRAZIL: if you liked time bandits, but like your stories darker, oh! much darker, go for this crazy journey through a mad, mad world. this is unlike anything you have seen before or since this masterpiece was made. some people puke on it, i dont see why. it is just so powerful, constantly playing the thin line between comedy and tragedy, another brilliant cast who should have won all awards available as a whole, including katherine hellman and michael palin, and robert de niro in the mother of all cameos.

I also loved Time Bandits (and Sean Connery, the best Bond eva!) but I had totally forgotten that his character was Agamemnon. Good catch!
Jeremy Northam was also in a movie called Happy Texas (with Steve Zahn and William H. Macy) about two Texas convicts who escape and wind up stealing the RV of, and being mistaken for, children's beauty pagent advisors (this was before Little Miss Sunshine). It was pretty funny, and he does well playing an American (sorry, tipou).
