Now you're just being sarcastic!
Perhaps we should invite Mr Bennett to come and give his opinion - that is the only way we can find out what his intent really was!

... I am deeply impressed by the discussion I caused and by the answers of all of you. As a "new-by" of this board, it's such a good feeling to be surrounded by people who do not mind to have such deep thoughts about "just a movie". For us it is more. And I really reflected about my strange point of view. I think the rest of you is right... it is not a pessimistic ending. It is all open. That gives me hope that next time I watch this wonderful film, I will not have nightmares about poor him abandoned once again

Hi bluehorse
I'm with the happy ending gang. He came half way across the world to see her didn't he. On 1 leg too. Hell of alot of effort to deliver a pearl if he was going to say see ya later then. By the way love the avatar.

Bluehorse, thanks for getting us started on the topic. We need more of these discussions. I'm interested to hear your opinions on other Rufus films you've seen.

Oh thx to all of you again! It was not me who started, I just went on, the discussions you are having here are really doing me so good!!!! To point out what my impression of the ending scene was: ok, he went to look for her. Ok, maybe a little touch of a cheek (especially if it is HIS cheek) may mean much. Still... my doubt remains. LOL. But: the really exiting thing is, that everyone can make her own ending on this film. That's what's making it GREAT!!!! You are all so damned right... we don't want to see them sitting in a rocking chair with silver hair. I simply find it exiting to see what we all see in that one film and also in its ending. I think, every person who sees a film, makes it's own film. There is not just a thousand or a million copies round there. Everyone of those who are watching it, make a new film of it! Also when reading a book. I myself write books and it's fascinating to see what people read out of it. I'm really thankful to share thoughts with you, explore deeper insights and other points of view. As I already wrote somewhere else, I am really a "new-by"... at the age of almost 50 for the first time in my life I really got mad at an actor. Never experienced that before. And it's not just an actor, it is characters, it is stories that follow me in my dreams, involving my thoughts, my feelings, my almost everything. Well, who do I tell this? But anyway, thx for encouraging me. I will soon come back with my tormented thoughts about other films

Love this film! I may have to watch it again right now! My thoughts are it was a reunion...a kiss came after that we never saw (in my mind anyway). May be difficult to plant a passionate kiss on someone while standing on one leg..well I really dont know that for sure. Now that I think about it...it could be done! I think Evelyn was a bit in shock when she saw him. It would not take me long to recover!
bluehorse...I love your avatar and name. What is the avatar from? Not sure I have seen this pic.

Oh yes, the kiss.... I bet it could be done! Even on one leg. Even without legs Well to be honest, I just took the avatar from google somewhere. There are much sweeter pics on my computer, but unfortunately, it's not possible to use them here. My name is my nick name since I use the internet. It is my homage to the painting of Franz Marc,, called Bluehorse. Just google it, if it were not for Rufus, I would have used it as my avatar

. It is my homage to the painting of Franz Marc,, called Bluehorse. i looooove franz marc's painting! the colours!!! but, i digress. i agree with rueful, we need more discussion about actual movies. i like the roof for aesthetical reasons, like any girl here, but i am first and foremost a movie lover, and he gracefully adorns a few of my favourite ones, and he got me to discover gems of movies i would not have seen ever if i had not been curious about his career. it is a blast anytime i mention rufus to a movie buff who does not quite remember him, and i start to enumerate movies... and the reaction is very often: that is all the same guy?that is what i like about movies, and what i would do myself if i were an actor. why be always the same lame tom cruise character, in every movie one after the other? b-o-r-i-n-g. i mean, really... what real actor would not want to be mick? but, sorry, the role is taken. for good. SIGH

What is the avatar from? Not sure I have seen this pic. It's from a series of photos taken in a loft in New York while Rufus was appearing in Rock'n'Roll on Broadway. They are all on a thread buried deep In the Media section somewhere. Some of them are here: www.roofsewell.com/photo7.htm

This is my three pennyworth on IASL You don't have to snog the face off someone to know whether you will stay together. The gentlest of touches can mean so much more. And I don't think Evelyn would talk about her memories the way she does if it ended unhappily....

Your comments almost make me feel ashamed. Seems I was the only one with such a pessimistic interpretation of that scene. Shows a lot of my character, I guess. Anyway, you got me convinced As soon as the postman finally brings me some new DVDs, I hope to continue these interesting discussions on other films! I love to talk to you all! Have a great day!

Dont feel bad. We all have different interpretations and opinions. No one is wrong. Continue to share your thoughts. We do all agree on how wonderful and talented Mr Sewell is!

Please don't bluehorse - and please don't be convinced to change your perfectly valid opinion in view of the comments made here.
Although i do personally see a happy ending for Mick & Evelyn, as do many others here, i strongly believe that, in part, is due to the intense emotional stake we have in Mick and in all the characters that Rufus portrays.
Sometimes i think we can forget that the film-makers and other audiences do not have this emotional stake in his characters - after all we are the people who have re-written the ending to Tristan & Isolde because we can't believe that she isn't in love with Marke. But believe me, i have watched T&I with other women who are not so emotionally invested in Rufus, and they completely buy the story of the love between the two younger people.
Similarly, i am sticking to my opinion that audiences who are not us, may well read the ending of IASL differently. If the story was in fact supposed to end with Evelyn crying on Mick's grave, i don't think the writer/director would have been so keen to completely change it to an happy ending to satisfy test audiences any more than Alex Proyas was happy to change the beginning of Dark City.
The ending, as with the rest of the film, i think has been left with a slight ambiguity. A writer/director worth their salt must surely want people to walk away from a film thinking about it and the issues that it raises.
To say that the touch on the face - however gentle and heart wrenching and indicative of an intense emotional attachment between the two people it is - is obviously a happy ending, takes away from the integrity of the film i think.
As i said before, i personally see a happy ending for Mick & Evelyn, but that is because i desperately want a happy ending for all of Rufus's characters. To see him hurt or dying or heart broken is too much for me, and i am well aware that my personal views colour my viewing of his work.
I'm not going to get involved in any more deep discussion of this issue. I think i've stated my case sufficiently and other people's opinions are not going to change mine at this point.
Please don't let them change yours either, bluehorse.

Kygal and Numbat are quite correct, Bluehorse! You're own response to any film is natural and right for you. Some of us here can be quite stubborn in our opinions, so you feel free to be the same way!

Girls, you are all so sweet! I really feel happy that I found this board. Makes me feel "at home" somehow! Thx again! Numbat, even though I'm a complete new-by, I feel just the same as you for the characters Rufus is playing. I HATE to see him die, HATE to see him suffer. In IASL I thought that once again he was on the losing side and that's why I so much hated the ending. It's not about being stubborn, I just think that through this discussion, I got to see it in a different way which feels MUCH MUCH better than the one I saw at first. I gladly change my mind and next time I watch it, I will not be afraid of the final scene anymore. I will need a lot of Kleenex, nevertheless. And if I need some laughing, I simply listen to Dr. Syn (my neighbors must think I'm crazy when they hear my loud laughter in the middle of the night... and they are right). And when I need something which really heals my soul, I watch Uncorked. Think I will do this tonight Hope you are all having a good time! cu
