alas, like nick silver, i could not sleep.
so in goes the nightmare into the dvd player. in between my own nightmares, john murdoch's own nightmare started. i could not have chosen a better time to watch.
what a beautifully designed nightmare, dark city is. i have not been inclined, before, to watch proyas' movies. all guy's flicks, i tought. my boyfriend danny will be thrilled when i tell him i am ready for them now.
the first thing this movie reminded me of is the climate in jean-pierre jeunet's first movies, namely the city of lost children – funny thing, the same thing is said in wikipedia, so maybe i really could be a movie critique after all. jeunet is known, when more upbeat, for directing flicks like amelie poulain. lost children is much, much darker, and i found the same feeling in dark city. like a very inky cartoon. yum yum yum. it did not remind me of blade runner that much, like some people have said. i thought more of nosferatu and metropolis.
i guess you have all seen the movie, so there is no reason for going over it all. i have not seen the old version, i chose to listen to god sewell's advice i read somewhere, and i went straight to the director's cut.
and if you have not seen dark city yet, please do, i refuse to spoil the fun for you.
i can tell you how it is impossible to describe dark city in a few words. i can tell you that, as the world changes, as it disappears, reappears, becomes flat and yet revolves, as the very fabric of time is altered, you will doubt your own mind. is this a mistake in the script, or is this supposed to happen? have they done that on purpose, what am i missing? is this guy crazy or really bright? there are true strokes of genius in that. cinema like it’s supposed to be. entertainment, sure, but also bread for the brains.
so, dark city indeed... but, like any good science-fiction, the human soul is at the core of the story, not the tricks, not the machinery, not the gothic scenery.
so enters a beloved cast. peach, if you read this, we MUST sign the entire cast for our dream casting agency. these people are gooooooood.
the first scene where we see god william (hurt), playing music, is when the comparison with director jeunet occurred. how sweet he is, william. the screenplay immediately shows him as an exceptional detective mind, but it's the heart that shows. i love william. let me repeat it, i love william.
keifer must have so rejoiced in having this juicy role. he revels in it like only a sutherland can. the halting speach of the character is delightful, keifer makes it a real treat. i love keifer. let me repeat it, i love keifer.
but since this board is, after all, dedicated to rufus, and not to william or to keifer or to alex proyas, i will nonetheless have my little outburst of love towards my (our) rufus.
can you think of another guy for the role? probably. this is not rufus’ best role, or even his best work, by far. he runs around a lot, jumps and falls, run again. and he plays it like he is not sure if he is on broadway, or on a soundstage.
but those big haunted and haunting eyes, this silly putty face, so expressive and heart-breakingly tortured throughout the nightmare... yes, the angel/demon face that hides such a huge talent was ideal to illustrate, with a minimum of dialogues, the ordeal that his character endures, and the purity of soul that will ultimately save him, and his world. another guy could have done the job, i guess. but no other pair of eyes could have us readily believe that they could hold such power - sorry if this was a spoiler.
he could have been another prop in a sci-fi flick, our rufus. i would bet he was chosen for his face, rather than his shakespearian background. he simply has the face needed to play that role. he could have just “been there”. but, see, even when rufus is not at his top, he is better than most. he has his own personal moments of genius in dark city. when he succumbs to panic, screams and kicks around to make the world wake up around him – genius. during the last sequence with jennifer connely, when he becomes the man he wants to be – genius. whenever he expresses the most primal fears at the core of the human being – pure genius.
so see it, by all means. and be ready for surprinsingly great lines. example, god william's best line, imho : nobody ever listens to me.
