Did you buy the films? We were discussing TPOTE at the Easter coffee table on Sunday. My sister and I agreed that Tom Builder was gorgeous, and even her boyfriend started rambling about his muscular physique ;D Mr. Kate just looked on with lots of question marks circling above his head

Oh that did make me laugh, KMK No, I didn't buy them, unfortunately. There's a rule (and will continue to be a rule as long as possible according to my parents and my sister) that I'm not allowed to get anything frivolous (that could be given as a gift) at least a month before my birthday. I'm kind of giving them less and less ideas each year birthday-wise without realizing it, so I don't mind it--as long as that's what they'll get me, or anything else Rufus-related. ;D

I know that birthday-gift problem - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be Tom Builder among your presents

Everyone probably discussed this already but I wanted to know your thoughts on this.
In one of the last scenes Prior Philip and Jack are talking about the cathedral. Prior Philip discounts all that Tom Builder did by calling him a dreamer..... and Jack got things done (the Brunelleschi of his day). Well if it were not for our dear Tom, Jack would not be a master builder but a mute in a cave carving wood... It seemed like a slight to Rufus and his character.... Had Tom not been senselessly killed off, he definitely would have found a way to raise the "roof" (pun intended) and build the dome...... Why couldn't they have ended by just saying " dear Tom would be proud of what you've done with the cathedral?
Thoughts......

I see your point, as you rightly say that Jack would probably never have had a chance at any kind of career without Tom. However, in my opinion there are different kinds of dreamers. A dreamer could be someone with his head in the clouds who's got lots of brilliant ideas but gets nothing done or someone who has a dream which is not just some cloudy thought but a real vision and works hard to make it come true. With regard to Tom Builder, "dreamer" makes me think of the quotation by T.E. Lawrence: "All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dream with open eyes, to make it possible."

I guess you could say Tom Builder was a dreamer. I like to visionary..... I just thought Prior Philip was a bit dismissive of Tom and his visions of the cathedral.....I saw Jack as more of sponge...soaking up all the knowledge he could from Tom and from the French.... I like that quote.....

Well, I'm coming from a different direction: I see the greatest respect in these words. Prior Philip was the man of the reality. He solved the problems to make everything work in the optimal way. He had wanted a church for duty (at first). And he admires Tom being a dreamer, because now there is a beautiful cathedral, which is much more than a practical mind could have made.

[I like to visionary..... Right - "visionary" might have been the better word to use because it doesn't have those ambiguous connotations.

I think I'm just smarting because he was needlessly killed off to make a plot point....

They respected Tom at the end. He was a dreamer but he made his dream come true. He had a vision which he did not live to see come to full fruition but he worked hard all his life to fulfil his dream. This carving is over the Cathedral Door at the end

Ah ah... you found the carving then Robela...good on you and thanks for posting such lovely pictures.
Sorry couldn't resist a peek and the boss is out!
Yes I was miffed with Philip when he referred to Tom in that way. But as has been shown in some interesting posts here, Philip's words can be interpreted in several ways. I too prefer the visionary term. Regarding Tom's death: I still cannot understand why he did what he did and did not defend himself.
I understand that Rufus had to fight for the role of Tom Builder. He had been offered another role in the film. Is this true? Does anyone know what the other offer was? Was it the William part by any chance!!!!

Regarding Tom's death: I still cannot understand why he did what he did and did not defend himself. I didn't quite get that either. This scene was a little different in the book - there he it was more or less an accident that Tom couldn't have seen coming. Yuck, I hope not! (Don't really think so, he doesn't look a thing like the book's William and would also have been a bit too old.) I'd also like to know what the other role was. Philip? The bishop?

I have seen an interview somewhere, where he says that he had to fight to play Tom the Builder and that he was offered another role. He intimated it was the kind of role he didn't want to play. i.e. A t...t on a horse!!!
