I wondered if it was Prior Philip? Or maybe Waleran - he was much closer in age to Philip in the book. Maybe McShane was second choice after Rufus turned that role down?!

We're thinking alike, GE2! ;D Rufus would have done a fine prior or a fine bishop, but I'm glad he got the Tom Builder role as it was something quite different from all the things he'd done before. I'd love to see him in more of those visionary father-figure roles.
(Whereas robela's quotation does sound more like William ...)

(Whereas robela's quotation does sound more like William ...) Ah, but that was Robela's addition - he intimated it was a role he didn't want to play, but not necessarily the "....on a horse bit"! At that time he was still saying no more baddies. It might even have been Percy Hamleigh he was offered!

Oops, you're right, GE2! Careful reading is highly recommended

Right. Well, as some of you already know, I'm a POTE virgin no longer. I actually ended up staying up all of last night watching episodes 4-8 because I literally could not tear my eyes away. I'll have to watch it again to do a full-on-full review, but all-in-all, I loved it. It was absolutely fantastic, and I am now hopelessly in love with Tom Builder just like the rest of you I mean, honestly, could a character be more beautiful in not only looks but dreams and spirit and faith? After watching, I can't picture anyone but Rufus playing the role. I'll do a proper review a little later.

LOL Meg, welcome in the club, I'm in a daze from Tom just now too, but not the first time.

Just saw TPOTE again this weekend, and I still feel sad about Tom. It's getting worse every time I watch.

Tom's last scene itself is heartbreaking enough, but what always gets me even worse is when Philip talks to "Brother" Jonathan about his father

Exactly! And the part where Jack and Aliena call their son Tom, after the father he knew.

Reading the thread from the start... If I only knew you ladies are having so much fun here, at least up until episode 5, I would have joined long time ago. I was like at some very brave comments, and was visualizing some naked masons...anyway! I watched the first 5 episodes recently and have my fresh memory of that, but will give them another go just for the pure pleasure to watch one of the characters again ;D I am intending to take notes this time on some of the major points you all mentioned. Luckily I am watching the show on my computer (the screen is big enough for sure ;D) and it is very comfortable to write and pause where needed . So, see you here in a bit!

LOL, Chocolate! You should probably be happy that we lost the first several pages in this thread (and many others) when Proboards had a meltdown last July. Otherwise, you'd still be reading!
Have you read the book? That seemed to effect some people's opinion of the prodution. I'm looking forward to reading your insights on the series.
