IMHO that's absolutely true! I just had a look at the other nominees: did you see how often The Tourist was mentioned - of course only AJ and JD!  I'm sorry I'm going to repeat myself, because I also posted something about this in The Tourist thread, but now the GG have really annoyed me! It's bad enough that they ignored Rufus's brilliant but performance in TPOTE, which was crucial to its success on a critical level, but then I saw this, and I am thoroughly disgusted.* The Tourist, AJ, and JD have been nominated in the category "Best Comedy or Musical." Exactly which of those genres does The Tourist belong to? The members of the Foreign Press Assoc were so desperate to nominate JD and AJ (and thus improve the viewing figures for the show) that they were willing to stretch the categories so ridiculously and reward two very weak peformances. Meanwhile, they ignored lots of great movies and actors. *I know, I need to take a chill pill. It's only the GG.  But STILL!! |

I know I have just reviewed The Tourist " and said I enjoyed it , before seeing this .. AJ is her usual wooden self and JD turns in the weakest performance I have seen him give. I could not believe my ears when I first heard about "The Tourist"'s Golden Globe nominations on Craig Ferguson last night. All I could think was "WTF?!" "Comedy or Musical??"
Craig joked that it was all about who "bought" the awards, and went into a bit about the Italians wanting to see Jolie at the awards show. He too mentioned how with stuff like that going on it was hard to take them seriously anymore.
In a weird but very sad way this takes the sting out of Rufus not being nominated for POTE just a bit, does it not? Still, its too bad though that the foreign press did not champion Rufus' gem of a nuanced performance as Tom Builder--The Globes will often earn some street cred when they acknowledge a better, yet not as ostentatious/commercial performance or movie. They dropped the ball this time, between nominating the Tourist and by just going with the more famous actor in POTE. Since Mcshane is the slightly more established and familiar actor, did a good job, and I'm thinking he also probably had more screen time than Rufus, I guess they gave him the nom. But if they had chosen by way of which actor's performance in the series had most moved, wowed, and intrigued critics (and viewers)- based on the many reviews we've read- surely Rufus deserved the nomination more.
Now the POTE thing doesn't take me as much by surprise as it does dismay. However, this Tourist thing is hard for me to wrap my head around! You don't suppose a number of foreign press voters compared notes and nominated the Tourist as a comedy tongue-in-cheek, you know, do such a thing as a twisted joke? That they were being snarky, thinking it funny by way of saying the drama was so bad it was a comedy? No, no. I don't think so. But after reading several decimating reviews of it, you start to wonder.

sorry for all mcshane fans out there, but i found his performance a bit over the top in TPOTE, and i really cannot see why roof did not get a nom, his performance was way better - and i am saying it as objectively as i can.
i suppose when roof is 75 or something they will start noticing him.
AND WE WILL ALL BE THERE TO CHEER!
