Never give up on something. I thought Matthew Macfayden was indeed very good. I have not seen him before and I did like him a lot.

Sorry to hear you haven't been well, Mia. I hope things are getting better for you!
I also like Ian McShane and think he's a good actor but agree that his performance in this was sort of a routine villain (especially for him--not much different from the manipulative characters he played in Deadwood and Kings). If Rufus couldn't be nominated, I would have been almost as happy to see Matthew get a nomination. He was excellent. But McShane is popular, and that seems to be what the GG are about.

Good to see you back, Mia, but sorry things haven't been going too well - hope things improve for you.
That's what I hate about awards - they're hardly ever about acknowledging truly worthy performances, and more about who it's "fashionable" to nominate. Unlike Rufus, McShane seems to me to choose the same types of role all the time - where's the stretch in that?
Both Rufus and Matthew should have been nominated. Didn't the latter also miss out on a nomination for Little Dorrit? That was a crime, too.
And don't even get me started on Rufus not even being nominated for a BAFTA for Charles II - not to take anything away from his performance in TOTS (which was worthy in its own right), but I got the impression his nomination for Petruchio was as much an acknowledgement that they got it wrong in 2004!

I agree with you too, Mia - if not Rufus, they should at least have nominated Matthew. Or both of them Ian McShane did well, but sometimes his performance was a little over the top.

Glad to see you back, Mia! Speaking of Golden Globes, I saw a funny retweeted Tweet this morning supposedly from Mickey Rourke (although I don't think it's really him): Not receiving a Golden Globe nomination is like not being molested by your stepfather. You feel grateful but yet slightly rejected.

Jolie and Depp certainly shouldn't be nominated for a Golden Globe. Just been to see the Tourit and nearly fell asleep at one stage. Paul Bettany's character was really good as was Rufus' Englishman (of course) but the two main characters were very poor and had no passion.

Agree with so many of the above observations. Mia, I am a huge Matthew fan too, and have seen pretty much everything he's done pre- and post Pride and Prejudice which brought him to my attention. Do you think he and Rufus compared notes on set about working with the fabulous Shirley Henderson? Hee, hee. After Rufus, then Matthew, David Oakes really did do the most fabulous job in POTE. Made that character his own- evil but interesting (taking some cues from Ruf? If he's smart!) We all seem to agree it was much harder to appreciate Mcshane's performance because it was so been there, done that. Beyond that, it was just not rivetting--like Rufus' performance was.
It seems like the Oscars are the absolute worst offenders for giving actors (especially aging ones) the award for a less deserving role after they missed the chance to give them one when it was truly earned. So, of course the person who gets "robbed" that year then has to wait their turn to have the academy shaft another actor to get the award. It's a lovely system. ;D

Hee, hee. i kind of liked matthew as an actor, and his work in Spooks (see my "review of T he Tourist" i too am a total fan. i was very surprised to read very bad comments on his acting in some reviews, i suppose that whoever think that the only style of good acting is jack nicholson overacting might not like him, he is so very subtle in his work - and so you can relate to his roles - but then you have to be blind not to see how good he is. this being said, i love jack, only, thank god, there are other styles of acting. too bad they rarely get the awards.

The Golden Globe ceremony is this coming Sunday - I wonder if Rufus will be there, as part of the contingent for TPOTE's Best Mini Series nomination. The ceremony will be broadcast in the US live on NBC, in HD, Sunday, January 16, 2011 from 5:00-8:00 (PST)/8:00-11:00 (EST) from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. www.goldenglobes.org/timetable/

Thanks GE2. I'll tape the show just in case Rufus will join as part of the whole cast of TPOTE.

Well, I've been watching the red carpet "arrival special" for the past hour, hoping to catch a glimpse of Rufus, but so far nothing. I didn't think anyone would have stopped him to do a red carpet interview since he's not nominated and he's not a presenter.
Keeping my fingers crossed for TPOTE to win an award!

I've been looking at the photo sites, Judy - no sign there, either. I know he's not nominated, but TPOTE is, so you'd think he'd be invited, wouldn't you?
