So, TPOTE just lost out to "Carlos" for Best Mini-Series. What's even worse is that when they showed the little clips as they announced the nominees, the TPOTE clip didn't include even one second of Rufus.

And now Al Pacino just beat out Ian McShane for Best Actor. Ian M. is there, but when they showed him as they announced the nominees, they only showed him and his date/wife. You couldn't see who else was seated at the table with him. And Clare Danes just beat out Hayley Atwell for best Actress.

That's it. It's over and TPOTE didn't win a thing. And neither did The Tourist. No sign of Rufus either. I'll be interested to see what the critics have to say about Ricky Gervais as host again this year. He struck me as particularly mean-spirited in his jokes.

Thank you, Judypatooty, for the review. Glad I didn't miss anything too important.
(Missed most of the Golden Globe Show, and wondered if 'our' Rufus might be seen on one of the tables...)

Well I did not watch the "Brass Globe Awards" but it is not surprising that they did not show Rufus since they did not have enough sense to nominate him and I really do not think that Ian McShane deserved the award so that is fine. I am even happier Tourist did not win anything that would have been really perverse.
All in all I am waiting for Zen and I hope the powers that be in Hollywood and BBC begin to give a deserving actor more work

Yes, he was very mean to a number of people. Good on Robert Downey, Jr., for calling him on it. That kind of meanness just isn't funny. And after saying what he did about the President of the HFPA, I can't imagine he'll be asked back next year.

Shame Pillars didnt win anything. Should have been more nominations for it...even the music was impressive. No sign of Rufus. They really didnt focus on the Pillars table if there was one. Wonder if he would sit with the Pillar people vs Tourist people...haha.

How come you can get that, Nicole? Is it streamed online? Like always I taped it oldfashioned on my videotape and then would transfer it digital to my laptop. But as there was no glimpse at Rufus at all I think I don't need to do it. Really really sad. I hoped so for Hayley Atwell but she lost too.

I was never one of his fans anyway, he always made my skin crawl

A week or so ago I watched Pillars again, wondering if maybe we were unjustly wanting to snatch the globe nom out out Ian's hands and handing it over to Ruf due our obvious bias for his acting (and his animal magnetism too, hee hee) Well, I still say Rufus had the more inspired performance, the most moving, thus the better one. That said, given the extremely warped and campy character Ian had to play, I still think he did a good job--could have really been worse. Giving his performance a closer inspection, I saw that he tried to give that megalomaniac believability. It's hard to play down a character as scheming, ruthless, and arrogant as Waleran. However, if Rufus had gotten more screen time, a slightly bigger role, no doubt in my mind he would have been the one nominated. Ian (or Rufus) shouldn't feel too bad, though. It would be very hard thing to win an award when you are up against Al Pacino, as he is nothing if not a critics darling and a pretty great actor to boot.

An old thread, indeed. I am watching TPOTE for a second or third time and I know for myself, and probably for most of the other viewers, this TV series will be much closer to my heart than many others acclaimed to be successful or prized higher. I have said it many times, but again, all the awards thing is a little more political than should be. I never cared about the fact that a movie or TV show had an award or not, and I never will. For me, the most important in this type of media is the idea, the message, how it was brought across and if I believed in it and if it touched my soul in any way. With that said, The Pillars Of The Earth will always be one of my most valuable pieces of movie art. It has a wonderful and interesting subject (the way history, religion and architecture/masonry was melted into one story), great cast, ESPECIALLY Tom Builder (very my-kind-of-a-man), amazing Production Design (Kreka, who is my favorite Production Designer I have been honored to work with), wonderful photography, visuals and music...I can go on like that for a while...
I hope the day will come, sooner rather than later, when the way movies and TV shows are rated and prized will change and they will be valued not because appear to be politically comfortable, but because they are a true pieces of art reality or at least the idea of it. Until that day, unfortunately, a lot of muddy water will have to go under the bridge... ...nothing against AL Pachino or anyone else who got an award...
*sorry again for another emotional one...
