Not that there was much respect before, but I have lost all respect for these award shows. They are just a popularity contest for the rich and famous. Talent doesnt seem to matter. I guess sometimes they get it right. The ONLY reason I would watch this year is if Rufus was going to be there in support of TPOTE. I do hope it does well.

I remember reading a few years ago how rigged the Golden Globes are - that the requirements to become a voting member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are so low that virtually anyone can get in. No real knowledge of movies, etc. required. Plus, they organization isn't that large.
I think it's our age of 24/7 news that has given these awards their prominence. I'm not even sure how important the winners think these things are! I mean, you always hear people bragging about the Oscars they win, not the GG's.
I look at the GG's as a catch-22. They only nominate movies/actors/TV shows that are already getting tons of press. Rufus prefers to live his life low-key, so he'll probably never get nominated for these popularity style awards.

Another good quote regarding The Tourist's Golden Globe nomination ... Many thoughts ran through my head as I watched "The Tourist." Things like "Boy, Rufus Sewell is wasted in this movie," and "I wonder how much longer this is?" One thought that never entered my mind once in 103 minutes? "This movie deserves a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture."Here's the whole article: www.ifc.com/news/2010/12/bribe-golden-globes.php

First perhaps the individual who wrote this should talk to the reviewer who wrote "the use of Rufus" review then perhaps that reviewer might get it that there are people who really do recognize and appreciate actors. And they are really tired of movies and TV shows that reward mediocrity. Second I have long suspected that the awards are little more than a tribute to the producer who wines and dines the most and actors who have curried the most favor but to actually read that SONY took the jusdges to Vegas is a little surreal and sad. Oh well that is a comment on our times. I guess they have not learned that all the awards will not get people into move houses when movies have nothing to offer. One would think that it would be evident by the box office take.

If we are going to have these award shows...I would at least appreciate if they would GET IT RIGHT and give the nominations to those most deserving.

Yes, Ian McShane was very good in "Pillars". He played an evil narcissistic man. That was the sum of his being. BUT, Rufus played Tom Builder, a man with much depth and soul. I so agree with you, rueful !!! Rufus displayed a multi-layered man. He was a father, a husband, a lover, a professional stonemason, and a leader. Rufus portrayed him with perfection and warmth, even vulnerability. He should have received the nomination. And I am not prejudiced just because I am a fanatical serious fan. Second that! I assumed in any award's nominations that TPOTE got, it should be Rufus for best actor. I thought that the main pillar is Tom Builder character and he was indeed perfectly portrayed by Roof. I'm still baffled

Perhaps they confused Rufus and Ian, having seen this:

There's another one - it's not quite as obvious, but still rather creepy, the nose and chin particularly:

Can only agree, a girlfriend of mine who knows about my admiration for Rufus didn't recognize him in TPOTE with a beard either and thought, too, he would be playing this other guy.
She was surprised how versatile Rufus is...

Hello Girls! Been a while that I stopped here... some health and personal problems... I had to gave up my Matthew Macfadyen web... Anyways... I just wanted to stop by and express how disappointed I am with the fact that Rufus was not nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in The Pillars. Even though I am a Matthew fan, I believe Rufus gave the best performance of all the actors in The Pillars. And, leaving my obsessiveness admiration with Matthew aside, I feel that Matthew gave the second best performance. No doubt that Ian McShane is a wonderful actor but I don't feel this was his best performance. At least not so good as to deserve this nomination. I feel that even David Oakes was more deserving of this nomination than McShane. I was just mesmerized with Rufus' performance (and with Matthew's too .)
