FORUM UPGRADE

Some of you might be aware that Proboards has been developing version 5 for a while, and that the beta version went live a few months ago.

It's now time for this forum to be ugraded - this will happen sometime between 29 April and 29 May. It might be that certain things, like the Rooftop banner or the background wallpaper, might not show up at first and adjustments will need to be made, so please bear with us while we work out what needs to be done! The behind-the-scenes tools will also be changing so it might take us a while to find our way around them and get things how we want them.

However, expect some changes to the lay-out that will be beyond our control! It would also be a good idea to expect some teething problems.....

The log-in will definitely look very different, so don't panic when you see it.

And let's keep our fingers crossed that the changeover goes smoothly!

I wanted to ask this morning and was off for 15 min. In this time the forum upgrade was done... looks well, although bit some getting used to.... Well done

Everyone should be sure to look at your own profile and check your privacy settings after you "upgrade your account" (basically, this upgrade means giving your email and birthday again). Your profile can be accessed in the blue bar under the forum title. When you go your profile, there is an "Edit profile" button on the right of the page. It seems like most of your previous settings carry over, but I had to fix my email setting to get it back to the previous level of privacy. So on the Privacy tab, check your email settings (whether you want it private, shared with members, etc) as well as other privacy settings like for your birthdate.

There also are a few additional settings options we didn't have before (to my knowledge). For example, on the "Settings" tab, you can set the ability to save drafts of your posts. On the "Notifications" tab you can decide whether you want an email or a notification on proboards everytime someone responds to your post or no notifications at all (it's set to notifications for everything by default).

This is going to take some getting used to (at least for someone as slow to embrace change as me). So have a look around, and if anyone comes up with information or tips that you think everyone should know, please post them here. Thanks.

Thanks to all concerned for information. Will indeed take a bit of getting used to and must have involved a lot of work. Let,s hope that it all runs smoothly. Certainly looks neat.

Grrr. I had huge issues getting back on. I have at least two different Proboards accounts (the one I had didn't work here) and for some reason they all have gone global now. But they were connected to the same e-mail address and now Proboards caught up with that and there's a conflict with passwords, e-mail addresses and login names. Cue the creation of a new e-mail address and the third degree interrogation coming with it.

Just in case someone has issues re-activating his/her account, this might be it. But I'm all fine now, no need for the long sleeves (yet!).

In addition to the resetting of the e-mail privacy: I had to re-hide my gender which was showing up for some reason.

I must admit that this board's layout has changed little compared to some boards.

OK, off to change that weird alien out of my avatar.

Thanks for the privacy instructions Rueful (I wouldn't have known otherwise), and thanks for the info about the new features (I'm definitely liking the 'saving' post feature. I know I'm not the only one who's accidentally refreshed a page before posting something, losing all that I've just typed).

Don't expect us to know, Lassie!! I think it's going to be a bit of a learning curve for all of us!!

All the upgrading was done automatically by Proboards - I've just done a bit of tweaking and will have to find time to have a play around a bit. It doesn't look like I can jazz up the news banner any longer, so I might put a kind of noticeboard on the front page instead. Also, I can't yet figure out how to put our Rooftop logo back up.

But I notice we can use different font types now, so that's a plus!

I do like the extra fonts ... and if you notice, we now have these smilies:

(useful for when discussing Doctor Syn)
(useful for when discussing Danny Cohen)
(useful for when discussing James Franco)

And there are more, but I think I've made my point.

I forgot to thank Rueful earlier on for the very helpful pointers with regards to our individual account settings , and also to endorse her request for anyone to post tips and info on this thread if you discover anything useful.

I have to say, it might just be a coincidence, but I am having HUGE problems with error messages tonight - not just the usual ones when trying to preview (with which there is a particular problem) or to post, but also when using the new functions within different parts of the site. I had hoped that, being one of the last forums to be upgraded, all the problems might have been ironed out....  

Let's hope we all soon get used to everything!

ADDED: one other thing you might want to adjust, in the "Privacy" tab, is whether anyone can see your profile or just logged-in members. If you don't want random internet surfers to see any information there, I'd set that to Members Only.
