The whole movie is on youtube in little snippets. It's not too great quality, but better than nothing. [Oops, just realized that the page had turned over and zenina had already given you the direct link.] Unfortunately this is one of the films that's hardest to come by I only found mine because one of our lovely ladies posted an ebay link a few weeks ago Rousse, when I first watched it on YT I wasn't too sure what to think of Mick during the first half, but once he and Evelyn got closer, I loved him more by the minute

I saw it on youtube a couple of weeks ago, but waited to give my impressions until I could see it for real. I think I've mentioned somewhere that it took me a while to get into the film. But after sometime I felt myself being drawn in. The yellowish tint it was shot in gave the feeling of heat and a time past. It was an interesting and engrossing story (besides the love story of Mick and Evelyn). And Mick - what can I say. Another wonderful subtle performance by Rufus. I liked Mick from the start and fell in love with him on the beach with Evelyn Towards the end, when Evelyn is searching for him I was silently praying, please don't let him be dead (I still was traumatized from my Woodlanders experience the day before, which had left me in a sobbing mess in front of my computer) And the tears came when I saw the hand placing the envelope with the pearl. Definitely one to rewatch all over again.

Love the black-and-white, that makes it look like it's taken from some old movie classic from the 50s

This film keeps haunting me - I guess it's the Rufus movie I'm thinking about the most (I keep imagining how their lives may have continued after the end of the film).
One thing that suddenly came to my mind yesterday: the way they make love clearly shows the difference in Evelyn's relationships with Philip and Mick. When she's in bed with Philip, it's him who's on top, just as he wants to be the dominating part in their marriage, never really getting used to her strong, independent personality, taking her assistance in everything for granted but never really wanting to let her have her own way, her own career, her own will.
She and Mick are both kind of sitting upright, as equal partners and soulmates, tender and loving, accepting each other the way they are. That's why I love to think that the golden ring was relating to their love, not to Evelyn and Philip.

Just watched my newly delivered dvd of IASL. Oh my, what a beautiiful film. I thought it would take me some time to get into it but it didn't. I was engrossed from the start. The story unfolded slowly but surely. I liked all three main characters. You could sense the relationship between Mick and Evelyn start to develop. Like you Zenina, I had watched The Woodlanders yesterday and when Mick and Evelyn parted and when she returned to look for him kept thinking 'don't let him be dead'. I was in tears when she cried on the grave. When they met again at the end it was so beautiful! Can't wait to watch it again. I found myself, as you did KMK thinking about what they did after they met up at the end. You're right the relationship was so lovely between them - it seemed so natural. I think she married Philip because she admired him as a teacher and for what he was doing because she wanted to do the same kind of things, but then found that she didn't really love him and obviously the differences in their characters and beliefs drew them apart. She fell in love with Mick in the most natural way a woman can. Bit by bit getting to know him as a good man and finding herself becoming more attracted to him. (And who wouldn't)!! I thought it was a lovely film, very well acted out by the three main characters. I thought Maya Stange was a lovely co-star for Rufus and this is the best one I like of his older films. It was nice to see Rufus playing a nice person (I know his character was exploiting the natives but he wasn't a bad man) and for the film to have a happy ending.

Oh Yes Ophelia! Thats what I thought as well. I didn't want it to end! This will be a film, like you say, if you're feeling a bit down, or just a bit lazy, some chocolates, nice glass of (for me) Pinot Grigio Blush and just watch this movie. Its definitely a feel good movie, because Ruf is in it, he's gorgeous in it and it has a happy ending. After all they can do a lot with prosthetic limbs now. He'd be fine. They could have a happy life.

A love story so passionate, emotional, exciting and the first time I watched it, like Robela, begged and hoped he was alive. I was hoping so much for a happy ending but didn't believe it until I really saw them meeting again. I'm a bit torn about that. Of course I would have loved to see how their lives went on after that bittersweet reunion at the railway station. On the other hand, this particular ending offers more food for thought, leaving it to the viewer's imagination what may have become of Evelyn and Mick. Not showing everything explicitly can be exciting in its own right. However, I'm sure that they stayed together and had a long happy life, helping each other overcome their sad or traumatic experiences of the past. I keep wondering what Mick could have done for a living then ...

This film is haunting me too KMK. I watched again last evening. I am quite an impulsive person and sometimes tend to spurt out my thoughts and feelings before I have thought enough about it. The relationship between Evelyn and Mick is so beautiiful but subtle. When she meets Philip he is the one who pushes the relationship. She is interested in him and in his vocation but she goes along with it. He asks her to marry him not in a romantic way but as a means to an end! He tries to bully her in to carrying out his wishes but she is too strong a woman for that and the relationship is doomed! In the meantime, Mick is becoming attracted to her but just remains in the backgound, helping her when she needs it but never pushing her into anything. I love the scene where she calls him in to her hut out of the rain telling him not to be gallant! When they finally make love, it is Evelyn who comes to him. Such a beautiful scene. The look of surprise on his face when he says 'What are you doing here'. The only times that Mick dominates is when he quickly throws her rings back to her and walks off before she can argue, telling her the boat trip was on him and also when he takes her to the rescue boat and then quickly moves off back to be a coast look out! These are noble acts purely out of love for her. Finally when he has recovered enough from the injuries he has suffered some two years later, after the war, he again just takes the Pearl which she has won in the bet to her, but doesn't force himself back into her life. It is her that seeks him out! So beautiful! That look from him when he is standing there on crutches! I have to believe that they truly love one another and have found one another again and live happily ever after.
