But before the war he was pretty a lonely man - probably by choice. With Evelyn in his life, I'm not saying that everything that happened was forgotten but we all know what love can do. He has something to fight for.
There is no way to predict how you would react to such a loss/experience and the movie doesn't help us in that because it ended just when it should have started.

It's even more than wanting to contribute to their living. Prior to the war Mick was a man of substance, he owned his own boat, was a pearl trader as well as a trader in other goods, most likely he was a wealthy man (even if he didn't display his wealth). The war cost him his way of life, all of his possessions, his life savings, along with his leg. That's an awful lot for a man to recover from. It definitely is, and I don't think he'd have recovered at all if he'd had remained alone. He might well have ended up killing himself, not necessarily by actually committing suicide but by smoking and drinking too much and generally giving up on himself. He'd have had nothing and no one to live for, he'd have been desperately lonely where, before the war, his solitude was a matter of his own choice (probably due to some bad things he experienced earlier) and something he might even have treasured. As it is at the end of the film, he has still lost everything, but the woman he loves is back in his life, and that's what makes the difference. There is a long and stony path ahead of them, but if he learns to accept her love and care (which certainly won't come easy to him), he has a real better chance to make it and to feel valuable again.

My pleasure Rueful. How can everyone not love Mick? Oooh is right - LTM hits the nail on the head - how could anyone NOT love Mick. Don't y'all think this is one of his most perfect roles?

You're not seriously expecting an answer from me, are you? My particular knack for Mick aside, I really do think it's one of his most beautiful, most subtle roles.

Took me ages to actually get a copy of this even though I had seen it. Absolutely beautiful, the film , the character and the actor. An absolute must for any Rufus fan's collection.
