I have been watching IASL recently - for the first time! As you have already posted hundreds of comments, what more can I add?
As most of you love the film and consider Mick as one of Rufus´ best roles, I had of course high expectations! And I was a little disappointed - but not so much by the film but by Rufus not appearing in more scenes of the film!
I had to get used to the darkness of the colours as well as to the cliché of the "savages". But then it´s set in the forties and it may have been that way.
More than half of the film was dominated by the relationship between Philip and Evelyn, but even more by Evelyn´s development. That Philip had to die was at first unusual to me, too obvious to clear the way for Mick. But then I remembered that there had been love between the married couple and Evelyn had to mourn Philip before taking on a relationship to Mick.
Mick´s person is at first ambivalent, he´s got a bit of a macho and exploiter on him, but in the relationship to Evelyn he shows a kind of reserve, of treating her well, but not expecting too much. He waits till she´s mourned her husband until being ready for her love, which she expresses first. This love sequence where they struggle with their clothes was as realistic as the whole film - not as sappy, and that was what I had to get used to.
Although Mick seems at first quite selfish, he shows the "hero" in staying on the island and even letting his love go. That he and Evelyn would meet again was not so obvious at first, only when I saw a man laying down the letter. This last scene with her finding him and laying her hand on his face was really touching and showed me the happy ending.
On the whole I liked Rufus role as well as Maya Stange´s, who was very emancipated and natural in her play, while Rufus acted with a look of his eyes, a gesture of his hands. I think I have to watch the movie again to absorb everything, but that was my first impression.
And now to your fan fiction, Kate!

I'm glad you liked it all in all!
Your first impression was a lot like mine. When I first watched this, I wasn't even sure if I liked that guy or not, he seemed to be just another of those slightly seedy, selfish, grumpily unsociable types you find in most adventure movies.
But then, the more often I re-watched it, the more he grew on me, and I came to find there's more to him than it appears at first glance. He's just not the kind of person who wears his heart on his sleeve; actually quite a bit like his pearl shells, with a rough surface and hard to crack open. I really came to love his patience and his kindness towards Evelyn. He never imposes himself on her, he keeps his feelings to himself and stays on the sidelines until she is ready to come to him on her own account.

I like that comparison of Mick with his pearl shells! This scene when he opens the shells with Evelyn is somehow central in the film and returns partly at the end as the remembrance of her life. She takes the smell of the shell with her into the dark, to her death I suppose it means.
I saw his patience toward Evelyn exactly that way, but you could express it better. I´m glad he may grow on me with the time.

Hi, I'm new (and a bit shy) Finally decided to post as I just got a copy of 'In a Savage Land' DVD off eBay and am saddened to discover its a really poorly made copy by a guy in Ohio under 'BPS Video Services'. I'm sending it back and have asked for a refund. Wondering if anyone has a genuine copy of the DVD and can tell me what the quality is like? I've seen another 'factory' sealed DVD on eBay but a bit worried it will be the same horrible 4:3 letter boxed copy. I really want to see this movie.

Hello and welcome, RoofieRoo! I have an original copy (well, two, to be honest, because I wanted the extras that are only found on the Region 1 version). The picture is a bit sepia-tinged and tends to be slightly blurry occasionally. I guess that's what the director wanted, to give it this authentic '40s feel. Do give the movie a try nevertheless, it's definitely worth seeing.

Welcome RoofieRoo, Yes the film is yellow-brown and blurry but I agree with Kate I think that is the effect the director wanted to achieve although you seem to think your copy may be a bit suspect. Try and get a region 1 copy if you can. to the discussion:----- I think too that what we must remember abut this is a 'period'film set almost 75 years ago and thoughts and opinions were vastly different to ours. This is a lovely film but at the risk of Kate never forgiving me( Kate) I don't think this is Roof's best work. I would put it ( whispers so Kate won't hear) fourth I would put The Taming of the Shrew as 1 this is part of a bundle under 'Shakespeare retold' Zen as 2 Tristan and Isolde as 3 If you want a really sexy love story try Dangerous Beauty aka the Honest Courtesan

Thanks guys. I know what you mean about the colour (grading to make it look more 'tropical island' as other scenes are not this colour), but unfortunately the picture quality is awful on this copy and its not watchable. The DVD I was sent is a badly made copy but I just got a refund though so I will keep an eye out for the region 1 version! KissmeKate, what are the extras? And Francesca I adore Dangerous Beauty! Its gorgeous and rich, full of wit and romance. I live about 4 hours drive from Venice at the moment and am totally fell in love with the place. I read in an article Rufus didn't like how it turned out, not sure why though?

LOL, Frannie! No need to whisper, though I'm not even sure if this is Rufus's best work ever (I'm having a hard time to decide which project would get this honour because he has been so fantastic in most everything he did) - but it is certainly the one I'm most partial to. RoofieRoo, my Region 1 DVD has a few interviews with the main actors that the Region 2 copy does not feature.

I enjoyed your review of the film, Midoro. Very nice description of how patient Mick was with Evelyn and a good assessment of his character. Welcome Roofie Roo! I hope you'll enjoy yourself on the Rooftop. Please feel free to create a new thread introducing yourself in the Members section here. We love to meet new people, and members who don't come into this IASL thread might miss you! If you're not comfortable doing that though, we're still very glad to have you here. I also had trouble getting IASL. I first ordered it from a Canadian website that indicated it was in stock and then later told me it was on backorder. I found a copy on Amazon later. There are a few dvds currently offered on ebay (but the US/Canadian ebay, so I don't know if that helps you). www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xin+a+savage+land+dvd&_nkw=in+a+savage+land+dvd&_sacat=0&_from=R40 By the way, the interview with Rufus is on youtube, but unfortunately the sound quality is not good. You can try it if you're desperate. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmyHfWVRnSo

I also like IASL very much. I bougt the Region 1 version from Amazon.co.uk some years ago and it is good. As I do not have English as my native language I very much like to have English sub-titles. There is a DVD with Castillian and English sub-titles region 2 but it is nearly hopeless to find. This DVD is called En Una Tierra Salvaje.

Occasionally, the Spanish version shows up on ebay. That's where I got mine (and at a reasonable price, too).
