After reading these posts I decided to try to get hold of a copy, I spent all weekend watching it and what a delight. I can't believe that its overlooked in any summaries of rufus career. I thought his face was so gorgeous the close ups made me swoon literally. The kissing scenes were more passionate that most of his other films and we get to see his perfect bottom. I can't beleive he would be shy about it. I googled Alison Steadman to see if she mentions anything about working with ruf but GTS seems to be missing from her filmograpy.

So, baby Rufus is wicked! I'm not sure I would have picked that avatar had I known what he was up to. ;D
Just completed the first epi so far. What a doll.
He reminded me so much of Johnny Depp in that scene at the beginning of the second epi, where he has the black eye.

My favorite scene is where Billy is lying in hospital, shot by Alison Steadman, and he croaks "I love you" as she's leaving to deal with the police.

I'm on the fence, I 'll have to admit I fast forwarded past the non Ruf parts, hated the singing bits, but loved Peter Cook. At such a young age in this his performance was a standout. Love the hospital scene too. And of course the Hilda's fantasy scene. Hard to believe he was. Hard to believe he was 24. So talented.

My copy of Gone To Seed arrives tomorrow, hurrah!!! I saw this when it was first shown on UK TV in 1993. We first watched it because my boyfriend loved Peter Cook and I loved Alison Steadman, so what a bonus when Rufus appeared on the screen!! The rest is history. I'm looking forward to going back in time to a more youthful Rufus but don't get me wrong, I think the man has seriously improved with age and is so handsome still. I love his performances, he is a great actor, without any doubt.

Have you had a chance to watch it, ellie? If so, let us know if you like it as much all these years later. My dvd came also this week, but I've had too little time yet. I've only watched a bit. (It just might have been that bit that involved nudity, but I'm not sure, because suddenly all the blood rushed to my head and I felt quite faint. ) I plan on a Gone to Seed orgy this week.

So, I finally finished watching all of Gone To Seed tonight (it has taken me a few weeks between revision for exams/essays) and I loved it! What a strange and quirky series it was. It's funny but I don't remember it the same as what I saw tonight, I imagined something completely different, I don't know why..I guess the progression of time since 1992 has changed my memories of it a little. Rufus was oh so beautiful...a lovely young man, full of energy and promise as an actor even then. I love Peter Cook and although not a great actor, he added a certain atmosphere that he always seemed to bring to the TV screen whenever he was on. The rest of the cast were superb and of course Alison Steadman and Jim Broadbent are great actors in their own right.
The trip down memory lane with young Rufus was just lovely. I enjoyed it so much...I know now why I am hooked on the man because watching him in Gone To Seed brought back those first feelings that I felt for him...feelings of 'my God, who is THAT?' He had me then and he still has me!!
Love Elliexx

I liked reading your review, Ellie. "Full of energy and promise" is a great way to describe young Rufus (and current Rufus, too). No wonder you were hooked!
SPOILERS BELOW:
I also watched this very recently. I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the cast was superb, especially Alison Steadman who brilliantly portrayed the vulnerability of her character. I have never seen her as anything but the high-strung mother in Pride and Prejudice, as far as I know, so it was quite amazing to see her evoke this good, devoted but lonely daughter who finally finds the courage to reach out for happiness. Jim Broadbent always can break my heart with just a look. Something about his hangdog, defeated expression, and the way he cracks jokes even when his heart is breaking, is so moving.
I enjoyed the basic storyline very much, and there was a lot of quirky humor in it. The thing that I liked the least was probably the supernatural elements of the story. I don't mind that sort of thing when well done, but in this story, the supernatural seemed to be shoehorned in whenever the writer couldn't figure a way out of the dilemma he/she had established for the characters. It never seemed "organic." It was just like, "Oops, I've got Jim Broadbent floating around underwater. How should I get him out? I know, the ghost!" Or, "Peter Cook has a video that can ruin everything. How should I get it away from him? How about the ghost!" And it happened over and over again.
What can I say about "baby Rufus"? So talented. He was just fantastic, never the weak link, although working with very good, much more experienced actors. Billy's gradual transition from a selfish, sneaky young man who is influenced by his rotten step-father to a someone who wants to be a better man, changed by love, is very believable.
About his physical appearance? GAAAAAAAAAAAAH! That is all.
