Well it's been pretty quiet around here since the whirlwind over the weekend so I, in my usual inimitable fashion, have decided to throw some gasoline on the fire and start a thread about GTS.
Now before I begin, I have yet to see the very last episode. But there is plenty of fodder in the first 5 for all kinds of chatter.
My first question is, was Peter Cook born looking like that? This was 15 years ago and he looks exactly the same. That said, so does Rufus. He's thin as a rail but he looks exactly the same--okay not exactly but close enough. I read some blurb where someone said he was aging badly. Badly? He hasn't aged at all...
I love Rufus. Even at 24 he was so smart he knew exactly how to play it. He doesn't play: I'm pretending to love Hildy to get to her money. He plays I love Hildy. He is so convincing at loving Hildy I can't tell if he's duping her or not. Logic tells me he should be but his face and his body language say he isn't.
The gigolo role is an interesting one for him, because he's so sincere it's difficult to believe he'd be doing it. But of course it makes him a very effective gigolo because his victims never suspect.
And Hildy's fantasies of him are priceless. I'm waiting for him to ride up on a white horse and rescue her. That said, since she shot him at the end of ep 5 and he was lying on the floor gurgling blood, that may not happen.
Billy doesn't have nearly the depth or texture that his characters have today but there are a lot of hints at the actor he's going to become. How wonderful to be able to view this early work and see the snatches of brilliance that are no longer mere wisps but complete living breathing characters.
Favorite Bits thus far: "Mother" rising up out of the Thames like Hera avenging her children. Monty jumping off the bridge only to be rescued by a woman who looks like "Mother" and is having at go at finding an imaginary gold casket with a manuscript of Hamlet. Anything at all with Winston. Rufus bare bottom which is damn near perfection in male anatomy. The animated singing cowboys.
There are others but this is a good start. I will make Billy's song into a movie for the website for anyone who is interested in finding it later.
